Good reading, But what about the people that shouldn't have dogs to begin with, and the millions of offspring they have created? That's the "ONLY" reason I can see for N/S. I've had both. The 3 that where not not spayed all passed early, due to unrelated reasons. I have great luck. All the others never made it to far past 12. That's a real drag!!! MPO is diet. I see a night and day difference in the overall dog when fed raw. Though I'll probably eat those words too. Very interesting reading and will finish reading all article's when I get home.

Oh I just LOVE this link. Anyone who questions why I am against neutering and spaying go checkout that link, and it will answer your question.

I think they live longer in Europe because they are on the metric system.
One year in the U.S. equals 2.2 over in Europe.

Overall, the article is a good one and reasonably valid.
It does have some holes though.
"Ted talked to a lot of people in shelter leadership positions, and it seems the problem is becoming more one of supply and demand rather than that no one wants those two million homeless dogs. (The preceding sentence doesn't make sense. The supply is far greater than the demand.) It's more a problem these days of connecting people with the dogs they want – getting the right dogs to the right shelters for the people who want to adopt them." (There is no problem "these days" connecting people with dogs or cats that they want. We live in an era where it is easier than ever to connect people with shelter dogs and cats. Has Ted ever heard of the internet?)

"Both strategies have decreased the genetic diversity of dogs. Choosing only certain popular sires in the purebred world, and spaying or neutering everything that moves in the shelter world, has created fewer and fewer good sets of dog genes out there."
(
Really? Do dogs from these two worlds ever collide other than, for example, with irresponsible pet owners who let their purebred GSD roam freely and it impregnates the neighbor's poodle mix? Is this somehow going to improve the health of the purebred GSD or any other purebred dog?
If his goal is to have a bunch of genetically healthy mixed breed dogs then it makes sense, but, not for purebred dogs. We could also look at this from a purebred standpoint. How many of you are going to go to a breeder to buy a purebred GSD puppy that the breeder pulled a male or female out of a shelter to breed? That breeder would be scoffed at and called the worst kind of breeder. The akc would make sure of it because there is no money in it for them.

"Ted agrees that culturally, we've succeeded in making spaying and neutering our default position. Pet owners blindly follow the program without understanding the potential health impact or that there are alternatives."

(The above statement couldn't be more true, but, it doesn't end at spay/neuter. Culturally, veterinarians have succeeded in making pet owners blindly follow all of their programs, and it is in the name of increasing the bottom dollar.
