Hello All,

My girl is 44 days today with her first litter. She is currently getting 5 cups of Taste of the Wild Bison Formula and for supplements she gets Wild Salmon Oil and Solid Gold Seameal. I have just started adding a little bit of cottage cheese to the food. She has a very good appetite and started the pregnancy in excellent shape. She is 2 1/2 years old. Is there anything else I should be giving her? Im getting so excited!!

I agree with Abhay on folic acid and also give that to my girls for the same time period. It is said to help with neural tube defects and also facilitate an easier whelping and some say it cuts down on the incidence of c sections.  Can't hurt so I start before breeding and continue after whelping.  I also do not give salmon oil for the first 6 weeks of pregnancy. I was told by a reputable breeder that it can interfere with bone development.

I would caution that any supplements or vitamins only be given if the source of ingredients is quality and the company can vouche/prove as such for you. That sould include the *salmon oils* fish oils and such that are often of poor source/quality. Not saying the one you give is..but with ALL to check and yes sometimes it takes time and research to find out about the products! Best wishes on your upcoming litter! Thank you all for your advise! The Salmon Oil I am giving is Grizzly Wild Salmon Oil. I did not know that about the salmon oil, I hope I didnt cause more harm than good in giving it. She has been on this diet/supplement combo since the age of 14 weeks when I got her.

You won't cause any harm. I did the same thing with a litter a few years back until a wise breeder told me not to give salmon oil early in pregnancy and the litter was just fine.  It's not toxic, just advisable not to give it early on so don't worry, they will be okay.

check out this link regarding excess Vitamin A:

on the site they caution against giving fish oil in the early stages of pregnancy.

I think the solid gold seameal should cover all of the basis as far as vitamins during her gestation period.  I would not be adding anything else unless it is some kind of meat and I would not over vitaminize her.  Do not give her anything else as far as vitamins to offset her natural vitamins she gets in her food.  You could add some yogart or cottage cheese as long as she can tolerate dairy products and a little meat.  That is all I would add to her diet.  Best of luck  Nan

I agree Nan.

I know cod liver oil is an excellent source of vitamin A (also called retinol and retinal) but I don't know about salmon oil.  I checked (online) the label of the Grizzly salmon and vitamin A was not listed.  So you may be "good to go".
Unless you use water soluble vitamin A it can be toxic.  Regular vitamin A is fat soluble and is stored in fatty deposits in the body.  It can cause vitamin A toxicity.
Just be careful and err on the side of caution.

Best wishes to you and the upcoming babies!

You do not want to give cod liver oil to a dog.

Also, if giving salmon oil, you must give vitamin e. The body uses its stores of vitamin e while processing the salmon oil.
