Today is Nemo's 13th birthday.
http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=557479
He's slowed down a bit these last 6 months since he doesn't see and hear quite as well as he used to. But by gum when that refrigerator door opens 5 rooms away somehow he always manages to hear that. He still loves to go to training day so he supervise us all and recently when let out to run with the young pups they immediately knew this was someone they had to respect.
I don't have the issue in front of me right now but earlier this year the USA magazine did a very nice article with pictures about Nemo.
He's been a very very special little guy and if his temperment and character is reflective of his lines, I can wholeheartedly recommend that they need to be used and preserved despite the possiblity of dwarfism. He has the true shepherd presence with heart and courage - in his younger days he would face down full grown rams that were 5x his size - combined with what I call the shepherding gene - where he takes care of things whether they be small lambs or people who are "soul weary" (he has a really knack of knowing these folks and is exceptionally caring with them)
I thank Julia Priest for being willing to share him when just over 7 years ago he decided that he should go home with me. Of course we do still think that there was a bit of a hand under the chin attitude about that decision since earlier in the day when the young dogs were rough housing outside he had gotten up on Julia's good dining room table to look out the window. She went in and had a discussion with him about inappropriate behavior so we think there might have been a bit of "all righty then just watch this I'll leave home" in his move a short time later when he climbed in my car.
Yet each time we go back to visit as happy as he is to see Julia and his home girls , he hops right back in to join Remy and me on the ride home.
My prayer on this happy day is that he stays healthy and happy.

Happy 13th Birthday to the magnificent Mr. Nemo--you did send for his GSDCA "13 Club" recognition, right? He's more than earned it, since dwarves aren't supposed to make it to such a fine old age...but I know his longevity has *a lot* to do with the level of care he's gotten from both you and Julia. You really should write a paper on how to maintain the health of a dwarf GSD, because everything you've done for him over the years has very clearly worked well!
Congratulations to you, TIG, as well as to Mr. Nemo, charmer of all charmers. Perhaps you'll favor us with a picture of him enjoying his day? :)

Happy Birthday Nemo!
His story is such a delight. I remember the story you told, I think, about him herding ducks (?) and Nemo being clearly affronted that they were not sheep. Someone needs to make a movie about him! Such a great, "against all odds" story.
