I saw it for the first time recently, what is everyones opinion on it?

Really depends on who is using it.
I have seen it used as just another way to abuse a dog,
and have seen it used to add stress, but not in an over-the-top way,
and have seen it used where you kind of thought.... what is the point because they could do this on the ground?

What type of table training? I've seen it used for a variety of things from forced retrieve to training artices to developing more of a defense bark in protection to helping give a dog more confidence to helping keep the dog in a certain "space" due to physical limitations of helper or handler. Luckily I've never seen it abused myself.

In the hands of the right trainer it is as effective as any other method. When misutilized it has the same negitive effect as any other type of training. I have worked with a few PSD teams that utilized this method and their K-9's were no less effective or enthusiastic as any trained using other means.

I think everyone should have manners at the table. Napkin in lap and elbows off! Dogs should have manners too.

The tables by themselves are nothing more than equipment much like your leash and collar. How well training goes is related to the skill of the trainer. People should not shun the equipment but should be very aware of how it is used.

It is very effective when used properly. I use it regularly with our Police K-9's and it is an effective training method. You need to train with someone experienced in the technique or you could do more harm than good.
