Did you aquire (presumably) your first purebred dog without any prior investigation or research? Was it purely on their looks, or perhaps being impressed by someone else's dog?
If so, did you and your dog cope ok?
Vixen
Honestly, no. I had wanted a GSD since I was 5 yrs old and my Grandmother (from Germany) used to tell me about the beautiful
GSD police dogs. From then on I read everything I could possibly get my hands on about the breed. I got my first GSD when I was
25 yrs old so I do believe I was well prepared. My first GSD was from WG show lines and DDR lines. For a first GSD she was perfect.
Very easy going and biddable. I have since added 3 others, from various import lines. Each is a challenge in their own way, but the
GSD is definitely the breed for me.

My first high dollar purebred was a GSD. Impulse buy. Always loved the look. It was a disaster. Severe HD at 6 months old. She lived a good life but was plaqued with health issues. While owning her, I started learning about the breed. Bought better and better lines. The 2 pups I own now are off the charts. Far exceeded what I wanted (or expected) in a GSD. I don't know how I could improve on this line of GSD. They are only 9 months old right now so we'll see how it goes. I just love working with them and seeing them learn. I learned the hard way (as usual). But I wouldn't have changed a thing. Pete
Looking back now, I can't say I did much research nor was I educated on the lines, however, it turned out great. Best dog I have ever had, IMO the correct temperament to a T, and I'd give anything to find another like him. He was the one that made me research, learn and love the breed.
I grew up with GSDs, but made an impulse-buy after moving here to the US. I wanted a puppy sooooooo bad...LOL And I paid for it after! Nervous and scared of many things, and issues with allergies. I worked my behind off with that dog. Was able to title him through Rally Excellent and got a BH on him as well. Wanted to do a WH, but he took it to serious and as he is not too clear in his head, we stopped befor he thinks he can apply that somewhere else. He is a good watch dog at home. His nervousness makes him very alert to anything. So my other GSDs were more carefully researched and selected!
When I finally settled down and decided that I have what it takes to have my own GSD - it took me 8 months. Months of deciding on a breeder and most importantly the breeding female I want to have my puppy from. And of course a few months of stocking the breeder… I wasn’t in the “business of GSDs” so I wasn’t a “serious buyer” for them. They offered me several puppies from other breeding. Well, I almost lost my hope when I got a phone call and I got my girl (after the 10hr drive one way)... She is all that and more…
Believe me, there were puppies on the way that were soooooooooooo adorable and from such good ‘breedings’, but I’m not sorry for sticking to my plan.
I spent the better part of a year researching particular breedings after spending 2 years researching working line GSDs. Once I had that one, when I decided to get a female and breed, it only took me 8 years to pick one I thought was good enough, LOL. I'm not much of an impulse buyer for dogs, though I did get my favorite dog ever on impulse; I felt sorry for him when seeing him w/a total moron and I bought him right then and there. Best impulse decision ever.
I am impulsive in some areas, however when it comes to animals ( so far)...lol..I am very thoughtful about adding another to our pack...It's for life and they are a huge commitment...
I am an impulse/first impression person...i always go with my gut....so far no regrets, my 2 impulse adoptees turned out to be awesome!
I grew up with a beagle GSD mix. When my daughter was over one year old I decided a beagle would be a good dog. One day on my way home came across a breeder on the side of the highway. She came to town from rural area to sell her beagle and bassit hound pups. One female beagle was left so as an impulse I bought her. That was 9 years ago this november and Roxxie my beagle will be 9 years old in Oct. and goes on walks with me and my 2 yr old GSD all the time. Still looks like she is 2 years old hope we have plenty of years left together. My GSD follows her around lol.
