Had a puppy owner contact me with the following email about her 8 month old AB pup:
"Wanted to pass along some info. Had Buckeye neutered today and his hips x-rayed while he was under and still. He always had run just a bit off and unfortunately it came back that he has bad left hip dysplasia and will need surgery. i am going to hold off for as long as he does not seem in great pain and start to save to be able to pay for the cost, however I thought i would let you know if nothing other than for breeding purposes."
Both parents move like a dream, they are show dogs & many many judges have comment on their movement. They both come from a long line of great & good hips only. This was a litter of 14 pups, could it just be luck of the draw... I just hate that he is so young.
The owner's mother is a vet (probably the one who did the xrays) so I would assume the woman knows the risks of injuring the hip at a young age. I did ask how often the vet preformed hip xrays & recommended a second opinion. Her reply was:
"I actually had them done because he has always seemed to favor the left side and never has run very straight. Anyway I will have him xrayed periodically and see how long he holds up and all. i talked to a team of four vets and then looked at the images myself. they have the pain meds rimadyl and the joint meds, cosquin (sp) which i can try before surgery. I actually have a CD, their xrays are all digital now, i dont have it at work with me but can try to send tomorrow."
I know theres no way to get a deffinite answer, was just curious of what others would think.

I can't find Fred Lanitng's book on hip dysplasia, but I think he says one-sided dyspasia is often the result of an injury. The owner may be aware she has to be careful with a young pup's joints, but there are lots of other ways a pup can get injured (playing too roughly with its littermates, for instance, or with a large litter like that, a birth injury could be possible, due to overcrowding in the womb.)
Could you post the x-rays when you get them, pelase?
