We have a 6 month old male puppy, a bit over-sized with big ears have not gone up (he was late in losing his baby teeth - he stopped teething at 5 months and one week). Occasionally, one ear may go up but 90% of the time it is down.

Does anyone with a dog from the Kirschental line have or had this situation with ears not going up?

Name a bloodline, show or working, and you'll find individuals of that line with one or both ears that failed to stand--so I'm sure there are some Kirschental dogs with a "friendly" ear or two, but it's no more typical of their breeding than it is of any other.

That said, pups can be and do become lazy at times, and some actually learn to keep the ear(s) down, so it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to have someone who's experienced with GSD ears show you how to correctly support them using one of the many tried-and-true methods.

A bit over-sized --- so ears are also a bit over-sized (and over-weight): Large and heavy ears have difficulties to stand, but this is a breeding problem like over-feeding. So put him on a very healthy but less abundant diet, no cribble better home-made cooked (chicken, one egg daily during 10 days). Mineralized multivitamins are good, but avoid pure calcium and/or glucosamine supplements (glucosamine is good for joints, but not for ears which require another type of consistency). Don't touch the ears for the moment, just wait. To tape the ears, there is a very discrete and natural way which will not deform the ear, but for the moment, give him more time.

Good luck

One of my dogs is from a breeder with several Kirschental females and I don't know of any dogs from my dog's litter or my friends' dogs that have had problems with ears standing.  They often go up, down, and sideways until teething is done.  My dog (Kirschental dam) has pretty big ears (I think) and he had the teepee going on, then one ear up and one flopped sideways until they both went up for good.

Brace them its cheap insurance to help them. There are many ways just google it. i personally would not wait another minute.  Do they stand during bite work or play when he carries things in his mouth or when chewing on something real hard? Again brace them, nothing looks worse to me again to ME than a German Shepherd with weak or floppy ears.
