well my daughter has a pug/austrailian cattle dog cross - we've dubbed him a "pattle dog"
-the breeder did it on purpose because she thought she'd make loads of money since she heard of pugglesgoing for $1200 or so - needless to say when she was stuck with 10 crazy pups with cattle dog drives, we got a great deal on our guy - pretty much an "adoption fee" . "Winston" is a great companion, likes to be a couch potato, but when it is time to go outside he has tons of play drive - and he loves to boss my German Shepherds around. A great pet,and we love him to death, but I am not a fan of folks breeding like this for a "fad" and I never knew pugs shed so terribly - worse than 2 GSDs in the house!

Frankly it bugs the crap outta me. What is wrong with the true breeds? And the fact that people charge $1200, you know, FOR A MUTT blows my mind.

There are a large number of labradoodles and goldendoodles in our therapy dog organization. They are all great dogs with wonderful temperaments and according to the owners, they are quite healthy and the fact that they don't shed is big plus for them. I truthfully don't see any advantage of getting one of those dogs over a standard poodle, but to each their own. Poodles and the poodle crosses are just are not my cup of tea. I'd much rather have a shedding shepherd :)

I don't get the cost of these mutts. You can get the same thing from your local shelter for $50-$100 with the spay/neuter already paid for.

I was just talking to a guy tonight that was almost convinced to buy a dog for $1500 that was a mix. He was told in 2 months it would be worth $4000 because it will be the 20th anniversary of the "breeds beginnings" and it would now be AKC.

Thats what really annoys me.... people think that these dogs are going to be registered in the AKC one day. It's just not gonna happen. You take a golden retriever and a poodle and make a Goldendoodle.... there are so many combinations of those two breeds that there is not going to be a standard for them.
What makes these dogs worth so much more than a shelter dog?
