Hi, I just adopted a ( I want to say 4year old but the rescue wasn't for sure on her age) German Shepherd. She is very sweet when it comes to my girl friend, grandpa, and myself. But when guys and some women come around she goes aboslutely crazy. She wouldn't even let my father into the back yard. I have my nieces and nephews over all the time and if they move/run she goes crazy with them too. I really need to socialize her but I just don't know how. She knows the some  basic commands. I took her to a German Shepherd trainer but he told me to just  put her to sleep, that she was no good any more then tried to sell me one for his puppies. I refused and drove and hour and a half back home.

I am willing to put the time in on her because I know she just needs to be socialized. She was in the walfare for two years and only God knows where she was before that. I don't believe in just killing any animal just because. I know she has it in her to be a GREAT dog/companion. The trainer also said that if I brought her to a little training sesion around my house we would be kicked out because of her agression. I had two of the youngest kids over (a boy and a girl) she left the girl alone for the most part. Then the boy and I took her out back to play catch, she was doing great but then for some reason she just went crazy at my nephew. All he was doing was standing there.

She also doesn't want to listen sometimes and if I'm not around she is a bit of a loner. When I leave it will take her a couple hours to warm up to my grandpa. She really is a sweet heart that just needs love and to be socialized. But how do I do that when I'm afraid she will hurt someone? I bought a muzzle and used it when I first brought her into meet the kids.

Please help. And if you know any good training place in chicago please let me know.

Thanks Milah

I'm near Chicago...what trainer told you that and tried to sell you a puppy? Sounds very familiar.............

I would contact KCzaja on this board. May be a bit of a drive, but I'd trust her to be honest and have no ulterior motives. Where near Chicago are you?

I don't think this is so much of a training case as it is a case for training AND management. Send Kelly a message. I think you can search her username through this site. Kczaja

Milah, I sent you contact info for the kennel I train for. We're about 40-50 minutes from O'Hare and I'd be happy to look at your dog, evaluations are always free.

Milah, she's beautiful. I wish all people were dedicated enough to try and seek help for their animals. Good luck, Jennifer
