I would continue to re-test her level every 3 days until you hit 5.0ng  (ovulation) I am having this same issue with my bitch,  on day 16 (Saturday)and her progesterone level is just 3.0ng which means she still has not ovulated. I am re-testing her tomorrow to make sure she has ovulated before I breed. I would not guess as to when she will ovuate and  continue to test. I have missed this bitch the last 2 seasons breeding on a "normal" schedule of breedings and now I see why. Good Luck!

Hi, it's not normal , but it happens...test again in a couple of days.......Next time, she should be ready earlier,if you keep breeding her.......Try this,so you can save some money on progesterone tests: check a smear for cornification every other day after the 10th day, when is 75% or more than half, then do progesterone...A good honest Vet, will do this before allowing you to do progesterone, because if there is no cornification, no sense in doing progesterone...get a microscope, will help you save some money...Good luck

Listen to GSDland not your vet.

I had one bitch who didn't ovulate until around Day 25. It is not typical, but it's not that unusual, either. Just keep testing her progesterone until you see it start to soar. When the progesterone reaches 5, the signal to ovulate goes out. 48 hours after ovulation, the eggs are ready to be fertilized.

If you test the progesterone every other day and get the results back same day, I'd try to breed her the day after the progesterone hits >5 or possibly that same day--because you don't know exactly when she ovulated and because healthy sperm are quite capable of fertilizing eggs 3-4 days after a breeding.

If you have an experienced stud dog and he gives clear signals about when a bitch is ready, he will usually be more reliable (and cheaper and faster!) than the blood tests.

It is generally agreed that the magic number is 5-10. This shows ovulation.

If you timed your P-tests and you get this result, 5-10, you do not need to do any more P-test. You simply count the days after 5-10. Inseminate or breed 2-3 days after this result.

If you had a result between 2-4.9, you should test again in 48 hours. If you indeed get 4.5, it will be a hard borderline thing. But 1.9 is not hard to decide: test again in 48 hours. You cannot just count the days after 1.9.

I am talking about same day result that is available in only a few places in my area. If you have to wait about 18 hours, (4 pm collection 9am result)  you have to adjust and make some assumption as to after 18 hours what the current P-level really is.

If the stud is not available every day of the bitches season, you have to make more test and be more precise and make do.
