I have heard that the best time to do hip x-rays is in between heat cycles. If you do decide for whatever reason to x-ray your bitch close to or during her heat how much does that affect the result? For instance, would they just lose a rating (ex. go from a good to a fair) or would they possibly fail where otherwise they would have passed well? How close to a heat can you x-ray? Does the heat affect all bitches hips or just some? Thanks for the info!

Well, depends on what the hips were to begin with:-)
Hard to answer- could go from good to fair, or fair to mild or borderline. Some may be fine regardless; it's not a steadfast rule or anything...just a fact that some subluxation can occur during this time. Personally, I would wait 6-8 weeks.

OFA says best 1 month before or 1 month after being in heat to take Xray

thats a bullshit story , heat doesnot influence hipratings , the reason why its not smart to Xray in heat , is because if you want to breed the bitch , to avoid Xrayed eggs/spermcells

I just had my girl's done while she was in heat and they are "good".

Duke, that is true, but it is not true that some bitches do not experience a degree of subluxation, as heat affects many things. Being female my entire life, I feel qualifed to tell you that all sorts of things can change during those times with hormonal fluctuations. Muscles and ligaments do get more flexible- actually, I have a condition of hyperflexibility to begin with and I was told not to become pregnant because the hormonal fluctuations would cause additional laxity in my ligaments and muscles....possibly causing tears. So, I do not have a hard time believing that a dog's hips, located where they are, may change ever so slightly during estrous.

jenny , take a step back and think this over
do you think a dog can have more arthritis during heat , and its gone after heat
same goes for the depth of sockets or deformed bones
do you think the heatcycle will make a bigger difference in muscle than the difference between an awake dog or asleep dog on the table
finally , if you do believe that stories , just dont Xray your dog in heat , but wait for a stressfree sunnyafternoon

Duke, what do bone deformities and arthritis have to do with what I posted or what the OP asked?
by duke1965 on 11 March 2011 - 19:03
arent those important in hip scores

Are you familiar w/OFA?
They will fail a dog for simple subluxation, no arthritis nor remodeling need be present.
