I thought this thread/article was a prudent example for the use of heart worm preventative. With the warmer weather approaching I was trying to figure out what is a good start date ......

Hmm, it shows the 6 month to start here and the 12th to end.....We never have mosquitos here until around mid-late April and they're gone by late October.
A question to everyone. At what age can a dog first get heartworm? I've always heard vets say they don't suggest giving meds until the pup is four months. What is the reason for that? And can a puppy get heartworm before four months if it is outdoors in the summer months....say from 8 weeks and on if they aren't on a preventative? My dogs live inside, and are all on heartgard, so obviously it's not something I'm concerned about with mine, but I've often wandered that.
