About two years ago one of our Bouviers got a very serious eye problem.  We tried everything we could think of as well as many vet visits, biopsies and nothing definative came out of it.  Have to admit we were really concerned.  The my wife found and old book on dog remedies from the turn of the century, pre 1900's and we researched what we could on line.  Here are some photos of before we started the regimine we did that finally cleared up the problem.  Let me say first the dog had passed the cerf test and did not have any other medical problems.  I will show a couple of the photos before then tell you what we did that finally cleared the eye problem up.

You can see what we were dealing with here.  In the old medical book my wife had it said to take the dog off any processed foods it was on and put it on all natural foods.  We bought about 50 lbs of frozen whole salmon and ground it just as we would if making hamburger.  The we added 100 500mg Niacinamide capsels emptied of course to the salmon and mixed it thoroughly.  We made them into salmon pattied about a pound each then froze them.  One patty per meal was what he was fed.  Along with the change in diet we purchsed pure Eucalyptus honey and put a drop twice a day into both eyes. I took these photos this morning to show you the results.  I am not saying this will work for all dogs but you can judge the results yourself.

Oh my gosh. What exactly was wrong? Was it just inflmmation and eye goop?

by sjbo659 on 07 March 2011 - 21:03

No, we were cleaning his eyes three and four times a day. In the end we never really found out what the cause was. The best guess our vet made was it was Canine Systemic Lupus. None of the standard treatments helped until we changed his diet and used the honey in the eyes. After that it clearned up with in several weeks and has been getting better and better. No more scratching at the eyes and no more eye goop.

Eye now looks great--did you share your remedy with your vet?

P.S.  Does this mean you're staying on the forum??

GGturner, Yes for now but am going to just stick with things that will also help GSD people as well since a lot of the problems experienced with Bouviers are also problems with Shepherds. Yes I did share with our vet and he is really looking into what we did. Especially the Eucalpytis honey. According to the medical book we found that in it can also be used on a dog that has cateracts to disstinguish if its genetic or environmentally caused. According to the article if its environmental the cateract will get smaller with time if not disappear completely. If genetic it will not make a difference. Have not been able to see if thats true yet but will if I get a dog with cateracts.
