I found this on craigslist!

Rescue volunteers went to Chesterfield SC this morning to pull dogs that HAD A RESCUE.
What they found were empty cages.
What they learned was too much to bear.
22 dogs and puppies were taken by the Chesterfield SC employees to the landfill and from the looks of things... used as target practice.
There are more than 22 shells found at the landfill.
Please call the press. Media is needed.
Sheriff Sam Parker, is this how your staff is handling things now that the gas chamber is gone? Rescue was there for these pets. Are cruel sadists working at this shelter? What on earth is going on?
Did the people responsible for this horrific, cruel slaughter think the rescue community wouldn't find out? Well, WE FOUND OUT. Someone needs to be held accountable. A criminal investigation needs to be started immediately.
Copy this, forward it, cross post it. Get the word out. Get the media involved.

Maybe we should investigate all these other "killings" and go after the people that left them there for all the stupid stupid reasons that they have for doing so, like they moved, and the new place doesn't accept dogs.
I have lived in my car for over a month waiting to find a place that allowed dogs. My apt complex decided to not renew those of us who had dogs leases. Wasn't the best time ever, but I had my dogs.

I have to agree with Jeff. Investigate the people who dropped the animals at the shelter and left others to have to deal with the consequences. Investigate why the people who dropped the animals off did not surrender them to the rescue group to start with. If some were strays, investigate who dumped the animals to begin with. I do not want any animal to suffer. However, more than 22 shells, how many more? 23, 24? Just saying more than 22 gives it the feel of sensationalism. If they had to kill the animals, 22 animals would need 22 shells. How do they know the dog was running? Sensationalism. It looked like a single shot to the head. Where do people think animals go most times when they are euthanized, especially in rural areas? I do think it’s too bad the rescue group did not get there in time. But to give the story this kind of twist, I don’t agree with. Sorry.

As for holding irresponsiblie people who abandoned animals for whatever reason I agree actions should be taken and laws are in place enforcement of those laws can be difficult when in most instances the animals are left in a holding area when the facility is closed a practice that should be eliminated but when it wasn't in place folks dropped them off anyway. Even with the best of laws it doesn't stop irresponible people from breaking them.
You do expect those who are elected and employed to enforce the laws to not be above the laws they are charged to enforce. This was a Animal Shelter operated by the County Sheriff's Dept. under the jurisdiction of the Sheriff who hires the Animal Control employees.
This county does not have a local rescue per se but does have a volunteer organization that has tirelessly fought and worked with other rescue organizations outside the area to find homes for the animals sheltered as well as receive donations and assist in caring for the animals with many fostering the animals at their homes. The shelter in question is only open for adoption 2 days on Sat. and Sun and the dogs involved had been slated for rescue but were shot on the evening prior to the weekend days allowed for adoption.
This was an incident where if allegations are proven to be true and the evidence seems overwhelming then a State law was broken. It is unlawful within this state to use "shooting" as a means of euthanization except in certain circumstances which did not appear to apply in this incident.
We here are just one of many other places that unfortunately have tragedies occur and in no way believe that we are unique or any more important than countless other areas and we recognize this sadly happens all over the world on a daily basis.
Right now we are just in the spotlight and not a good one. I pray that the attention this is getting will bring about fair, honest and good changes for animals everywhere and not become fodder for extremism. It is my hope that our tragedy will not hurt but help the cause and good will prevail.
I for one appreciate the care concern and assitance of the people outside of our area who have sacrificed their time and resources to take a stand along with those here who care.
