Does anyone have any inside info on this breed, information?  Temperament, trainability, living with one, etc.  Other than what WIkipedia and breeder websites say. Thanks.

Don't know what breeder websites and wikipedia says but I have met several here in MT particularly when I lived near the Wind River Institute:  http://www.beardogs.org/.  They tend to be a serious and aloof dog.  I would not say they are hard to train but they are independent, strong-willed, and I would not recommend the breed to anyone but an experienced handler.  They remind me quite a bit of ACDs with A LOT more of an independent streak in them.

Knew someone who had them. Reminded me of an Akita in looks and temperament.

I've heard that most of them end up in rescue. People get them for the novelty, but as others point out, they are very serious and independent, and don't make good pets.

Just had a client with one. Like a cute little german shepherd. Great tug, ball, and food drive. Very very confident, Liked her guy but didn't rely on him for her sense of self. Very neutral to dogs and friendly to people. She wasn't aloof, just didn't act like a lab. If they are all like this one, I would get one in a minute, but not recommend them for pets at all!

I assume they select for the trait of fearlessness, since they go after bears?  How large are these dogs really, I will do more reading on them.  Friend of mine was asking about them but I have never seen one.

A few years ago I met a guy from Florida who bred and trained border collies to work cracker cattle, which he said were too difficult for the average border collie to deal with. At the time he had a Karelian bear dog bitch. He said once he got it through her head she couldn't kill the cattle she was an excellent herding dog. His plan at the time was to breed her to one of his border collies and hopefully get good herding dogs that could handle the difficult cattle.
