HD, no doubt! But this young man was totally surrounded by police. If he had tried to exit the streetcar without dropping the knife, I have no doubt he WOULD have been shot, and by more than one officer!

To Sunsilver:
I believe there is a serious lack of common sense in this country today. In all walks of life.
There is also a lack of compassion. I think a lot of it could be blamed on the violent computer/PS games that people play. Gunning people down and running people over on the computer is fun so it ceases to affect the person playing so they become desensitized to all the violence and it then carries over to real life.
I would be very interested in some statistics as to the ages of these LEO's in all these shootings and how long they have been on the job. With experience I believe they are not quite so quick to use deadly force.
Of course, I could be wrong and they are just using a gun to make up for other "inadaquacies". I have heard "roid" use intensifies those inadequacies, too!
To Hired Dog,
LEOs are getting a very bad reputation for using deadly force when it is not justified. There is way too much of it happening and way too little of the cop in NYC who bought the homeless guy some shoes. He made the news so much because he was an exception to the normal cop of these times.
It is about time that you start changing your tactics.
BTW, if I hear a knock and come to the door of my house and was cutting up a chicken so happen to have a knife in my hand, are you going to shoot to kill me? " Of course, had that young man ran away and killed 3 people with that knife...". You have way too many "What if's".
You have been ducking out on responding to me. I would really like to hear the answer. Thank you in advance. Lori

If you had a knife in your hand, i assure you, the officer, if properly trained, would have a gun in his. Had you not dropped or raised the knife, you would be shot most likely.
You seem to have something against steroids too, when did you last do a cycle, what do you know about them other then the BS you hear on tv? Oh, let me add that a gun will never make up for nor substitute for what you have in your pants, another fallacy...

What if this box on the side of the road i am telling my dog to smell is indeed an IED, what will happen if the dog alerts, what if the people who set it are still in the area, what if its remote controlled, where is a good fall back position?
Am i being clear enough Lori, what if this building is full of insurgents, do i have enough silly string on me, how about tampons.....no, i am not joking..what if my dog breaks right and i have no choice but to go left where i am wide open?
Maybe your world is black and white, and if it is, i would love to live there, but, mine is not, it's full of what ifs

Hired Dog:
Au contraire, mon cheri, I do understand what goes on. Sometimes you have a sh*tty day out there with domestics and abused kids and juveniles who are disrespectful and gangbangers. I also get that you have to go out to MVA's where little kids are killed through no fault of their own. I rode along with one of my friends on the small PD who I had breakfast with as he thought I should give up my 3 times more income to come and work on the force there. He must have thought I was capable of doing the job since I was doing a man's job way back in the day (70's) and actually retired from that same profession/ same company and they are a very hard company to work for...
I also don't buy that the job is as dangerous as you are implying it is. Stats say there are far less LEOs killed in the line of duty than there used to be.
The point I was making with the story of going to the door with the chicken knife in my hand was to point out that not everyone out there has criminal intent to take you out. If you see an enemy to take out before they get you, I suggest you do get that desk job. Would you feel I was going to use a shovel or rake on you if I were out in the garden and you came on my yard? Just because you have a shield and a service weapon does not make you better than me or superior to every person you come in contact with. You put your pants on one leg at a time, don't you? Oh, just to clarify, I most likely would put the chicken knife down to answer the door but I have caught myself absentmindedly opening the refrigerator door to put the cereal away. It may be an age related thing.
All I know about steroids is what I have read up on. If they are approved by your PD or SO or wherever you work then have at it. IDC. "do a cycle" tells me you are quite familiar with them... From what I have read, they just give you more brawn so you don't have to use your brain as much. They also "amp" up a person, too. Which is not a good thing when you are dealing with the public.
I have heard of officers fired for using them so maybe they are not appropriate??? You are also very un necessarily defensive about them, too. Weren't they part of the Lance Armstrong scandal?
Comments welcome.
Have a great day, Lori
Edited to respond to your last "shot". I realize your world is fraught with danger... If your job is that fearful to you, I suggest you get a psych eval and find a desk job. For God's sake , man, every box or behind every tree is not a WMD.
I am so thankful you are not Protecting and Serving my town. Do those "roids" also make one paranoid?
Again, I hope you have as wonderful a day as you can. Please don't kill someone because you think the phone they have in their hand is a gun! Lori

What ever action Police should have taken, that is a dog I would be proud if he were my companion

I don´t get it.
Cops are saving lifes day by day, catching thieves and murderers, confiscating drugs, ....
We do call the police, because we are afraid of something, and the cops have to do the job.
They have to go into the dark empty buildings, they have to overwhelm the drunken or stoned guy with the knife, and they have to decide within milliseconds.
How many cops are out there in your country, and how often do they fail?
As soon as people do a job, be it as a cop or as a surgeon, mistakes happen.
There are thousands of thousands of police operations every day, but for the news only bad news are good news.
Nobody wants to happen this kind of mistakes, it´s a nightmare not only for the victims and their relatives, but for the cop, too,
but neither cops nor dogs are machines.

Hired Dog:
You seem to know quite a bit about the profession and appear to be defensive about it as well... if it looks like a duck...
Have a great day, no matter what your life is, Lori
