This is just my opinion....but....I would not breed my clear female to a carrier male or vice versa my clear male to a carrier female.

There are many nice clear dogs out there. Why take the chance that sometime down the road (from the current breeding) a future puppy owner, who may not be as experienced or responsible as the previous breeder, might breed their carrier GSD to another carrier or worse a positive.

To some my opinion may sound extreme, but there are still way to many GSD owners out there that have not even heard of DM much less the details of the disease. If we are going to eradicate DM from the GSD we need to start taking responsibility for it's future. We can start by testing all dogs and then not breeding carrier or positive dogs. I know the test is not 100% conclusive but it's better than nothing and I prefer to err on the side of some rather than no knowledge.

Respectfully,

Cheri

Until the disease (or diseases?) is better understood in this breed, it's short-sighted to not breed a carrier. I would think long and hard before breeding a +/+, but it wouldn't eliminate an otherwise exemplary dog. It's just one element of a breeding decision.

I would not place any of the puppies in show/breeding homes unless I knew their status so the buyer would be 100% aware of it too.
That's different than what you said before. Yes, I would test--or make sure the buyer knew to test--before placing a pup in a home that was interested in breeding. And the buyers would be informed of the DM status of the parents and that according to the testing no puppy from that litter should be affected by DM. But, just the same as I wouldn't place a dog for breeding with someone unless they understand how important it is to do hip xrays before breeding, I would want anyone buying a puppy from me to understand the role of DNA testing for DM. But no, I wouldn't test "just to know."

I will also make sure that no breeding I do will make possibly affected dogs--according to the current test. So, yes, all of my dogs are tested. So far, all of them have come back clear/clear.

Sorry, I should have been clearer about that, Christine.

Personally I would not withhold an at risk from a breeding program either.

Thanks for everyone's opinion, it opened up a new subject for me to think about. As long as the puppies are free of DM that's the most important thing to me. Im not sure if they'll get DM or not since DM is pretty new. I will get the pups tested before placing them.
