Wow, what a story.  Thanks for sharing that Keith.  That dog is a true hero.  That officer couldn’t have been prouder.

But Jim is right; the dog had to go since the officers life was in serious danger.   And I’m sure they wouldn’t have done it if they didn’t have to in the moment.

Question for the LE people:  why can't a K9 be taught to call off like the call out in schutzhund?  I see no reason why any canine should have to be dragged off a perpetrator which is so common with K9's.  If Kilo would have released on command he would be alive today.  I realize that many officers are not comfortable with K9's but perhaps with training on both sides that might not be the case.  Maybe LE officers who are not K9 officers are afraid of them because they are biting machines and not able to be called off.  I welcome any input on this.

Judy,

I am not LE and do not mean to represent myself as such.

My thought would be, if the dog has a call off command, how does that dog know if that command is coming from an fellow law enforcement officer or from a perp?

An argument could be "Well make the call off something unique" in which case you still run into the problem of how do all officers who might encounter that dog/handler team know *that* K9s call off command?   And if you make it a standard call off command, then the criminal element will figure that out quick and you run into a situation where the K9 is ineffective because the dog can be compromised by commands from the handler and from the criminals the dog has to engage.

ETA:  I believe that K9s do have a stand down command but when you get into a highly charged situation like this one ... well it definitely is NOT the control environment of say a sport field.

RLHAR, you are right  but I'm just thinking that it's probably unlikely that any moron who would commit a crime serious enough to cause a pursuit probably doesn't have the thought process necessary to learn the call off terminology especially if that command was in German or another language.  What bothers me the most is the lack of control K9's seem to have and that is a danger to other LE officers too.  There has to be a way to avert a repeat of what happened.  Not having a LE background I'm sure there are other issues that I'm not seeing.
