I thought sedation was the way to go to get the best x-rays and dog position?

I want the prelims on Max to make sure he will physically be able to handle mobility work, as part of mobility is being able to help a person get up if they have fallen.  If his hips are bad, now is the time to replan and redirect his training that starts at about 1 year of age.

I want the prelims on Cirberus to make sure she is physically sound for whatever direction we decide to go.  There is no sense in spending the time and expense for a trainer this year if her hips are bad.

Keeping in mind that their family history is an unknown; even though I had both parents x-rayed, it is best to take some extra care and fore thought into any adventure we go into.

fawndallas,

"I thought sedation was the way to go to get the best x-rays and dog position?"

There is a very, very, slight chance of your dog not waking up and dying under anesthesia or when coming
out of sleep.

I always thought that was the way to go, but after a man told me his dog was knocked out to do a hip x-ray and
she died, I though, now that doesn't happen all the time, but just once would be enough for me.

Kinda like feeding your dog white rawhide chews, they could get a blockage, but that doesn't happen to every dog....

I live far from you so I can't recommend anyone to you, but I can recommend that you try & find a vet that
will take an x-ray while your dog is awake.

I have found that if OFA excepts an x-ray from a dog that is awake, good, and I have noticed that I am paying approx.
$ 300.00 to $ 400.00 less in $$$$$, for me that's a no-brainer, and the BEST part is right after the x-ray they hand you
back your dog and he's free to go, none of this hanging around for hours waiting for them to come around.

Just a thought, like I told the lady with the 4 month old pup that the vet wanted to operate on, it all boils down to the owner,
you are the voice for the dog, just think.....What would the dog want?Wink Smile

Dr Taylor in Rockwall was even recommended by my vet for the X-rays .  Thanks everyone.  His price is very reasonable; $245 for both hips and elbows.
