Thank You posters! I understand it now. I've been advertsing my pups as DM CLEAR pups so I guess it's false advertisement. The sire is DM CARRIER and the dam is DM CLEAR. So would I advertsise them as DM CLEAR as in they are clear of DM or (?)?

All you need to do is to test the puppies and you will know which are clear, which carriers. They can be tested as young as 4 weeks.

i would say something like the puppies will never get DM.  DM clear does not sound right.

Except that dogs testing as N/N have indeed developed DM. As have carriers.

Okay, Thanks once again.

IMO when you make the decision to use a carrier for breeding, it is your responsibilty to test each of the resulting puppies before placing them.

Why? That's nonsensical.

I agree with Blitzen;  you need to test each puppy to know exactly what you have and DON'T have before you place them..   Otherwise spay/neuter all of them.  JMO.  N

Why not test them? My dog is a carrier and if I make the decison to breed her it will be to a normal. I would not place any of the puppies in show/breeding homes unless I knew their status so the buyer would be 100% aware of it too. It might make a difference to the buyer or it might not, but I would provide the facts, they can make the choice. I would also want to know how many carriers, how many clears resulted from the breeding.

So a breeder makes an informed decision to breed to a carrier..... but to be "reputable" should not let any of the carriers produced be bred?
Or must test them all before placing?

The logic here is off, imo. If a breeder wants to, super. The more infomation the better!

And again, in case I haven't said it enough:) :) ....
carriers and clears HAVE developed DM, and only a moderate percentage, maybe 20%, of "at risk" ever develop DM.

The test has not been around long enough, nor has enough statistical proof.... to make blanket statements. (and yes I have tested and plan to test my dogs. For infomational and fact gathering purposes.)
