30 years of raw food (and some holistic kibble) and never had salmonella or anything else from preparing raw food, nor do I personally know anyone of my raw food feeding friends that experienced anything other than healthy long living dogs. Use common sense to prepare food no matter how old or sick you are...but I guess some people are lacking common sense and need those advisories...

GSDPACK  I wasnt going to reply, but it takes days to culture for salmonella and other enteropathogenic bacteria.   A gram stain is not sufficient.  A PCR sample can expedite the process but takes at least 24 hrs....   It is this kind of misinformation that gets perpetrated on the internet and leads to erroneous conclusions.

I took it off, I did not word it right.. I realize the testing is not as simple as I made it sound... I admit when I don't put my words in the right "order".

Many people have become seriously ill from eating raw vegetables.  Salmonella can live and grow inside the cells of plants (so washing veggies may not rid them of salmonella.)

So everyone should stop eating salads and fresh fruits and veggies.  They are so bad for your health!

There are a lot of things that the AVMA does or doesn't recommend for the sake of money and not the actual welfare of animals.

I guess the AVMA and Delta Society missed all the headlines of dogs dying and having kidney failure and salmonella poisoning from commercial dog foods.  So much for that idea

I would like to know how dogs are specifically shedding the salmonella. I'm guessing through their feces? If so, when was the last time anyone picked up dog crap with their bare hands?

I know this is the post to protest (and I did actually through another forum) but really what did we do before the invention of bagged food?  Whatever your thoughts, I choose to have a CHOICE in the matter and not be told by some vet I dont know, feeding bagged food made from God knows what is better. Tell that to all the customers whose dogs have died because of it.

One side note: If vets think we are killing our dogs on raw, then maybe they need to improve the crap they try to sell to sick dogs. Its so bad Ive NEVER had a sick dog or cat eat it.

A lot of research has gone in to the development of commercial dog feeds and there is in fact an American College of Veterinary Nutrition.

 JC Meyer,

I think that all that they figured out with the extensive research was how to fill the kibble with filler.

My observation after feeding quality grain free kibble then switching to raw was that the energy level of the dog increased, BM were greatly decreased, coat is shinnier and teeth are white.

I think this is the case of foog companies buying the own professional journals.

The "Delta Society" is HEAVILY sponsored by PURINA!!! Read the article. They now have Purina's logo right along with their own. Nuf said!! When was the last time ANYONE who truly cares about their animal's health, fed any Purina product? On the dog food analysis site, where are the Purina foods on the list? lol
Like I said I really didn't want this to turn into raw/kibble pros and cons. But I have to address this...
Dog's feces always have bacteria in them! lol Guess what, so do humans!! lol Just because there is more in a raw fed dog does not mean people get sick more often from raw fed dogs. Anyone that handles raw meat and vegetables correctly, even when preparing human meals, will not get sick. PERIOD. But unfortunately one can not regulate stupid, so therefore there will always be those who do get sick because of poor handling and blame it on the raw feeding in general. Yes, dogs do lick their butt to clean it and that does have some potential for spreading it, but raw fed dogs do not have that much more bacteria in their mouth than kibble fed dogs. I'd like to see exactly what the actual difference is! Besides if you are giving your dog proper dental care, it takes care of that anyway.

I know a lot of kibble feeders whose dogs LOVE to snack in cat box, eat deer, racoon and any old animal poop they can find...AND if there is a farrier around shoeing, they eat the hoof trim as fast as it hits the ground and that has to be filled with all kinds of bacteria.  Where do these dogs fall in the, "feeding classification?"  I have been feeding raw for about fifteen years, never had a problem.
