sunsilver...I am open to be enlightened....

i dont feed my dogs anything by-product simply because it comes along with other garbage such as corn, corn meal, corn gluten meal, wheat flour....etc

I am yet to see a dog food that is grain free  that has main ingredient of chicken by-product...

Based on all previous posts we all agree that grain such as corn is bad for our dogs...so which dog food does OP has in mind thats good for a dog consumption?

"i'll be damned if i am going to pay those prices for the contents you are describing."

Quite possibly even at the same price, chicken by-product meal in dog food may be the same or superior to chicken meal.

Better is to obtain a lower price food that has chicken-by-product meal if other considerations are comparable. The by product meal itself, per se, is not a compromise.

BTW, it is also  interesting the "chicken" is by definition a moist and hydrated product. "Chicken, Chicken meal..." listed in this way does not mean that more protein is brom chicken than from chicken meal. in fact, most protein is from the chicken meal.

Grain free? Do you count rice as a grain?

I found out the corn in small amounts is not bad for my GSD, may even be a good source of fiber.

The Enhance Puppy uses by-product meal, it does have a small amount of corn

I think their "performance"  food does not have corn.

The intestine of prey animals have some grains. So it is logical that most dogs can tolerate a little grain.

Is corn to be shunned even if it is in very small amounts? I don't think so anymore. My GSD does well with small amounts of corn.

Corn is possible very bad for some GSDs but not mine (two).

I just won't consider a food with high corn content and I won't count the protein from corn as good protein. If a small amount of  corn exists, however, it can be a good source of fiber, IMO.

Chicken by-product meal, per se, is not a compromise vs chicken meal.

It may likely be true that more brands with chicken meal are superior to brands with chicken by-product meal because of other reasons.

Products that use chicken by-product meal might tend to be inferior for other often associated  reasons but not because it uses by-product meal.

There are good brands that use chicken by-product meal.
