Took the words right out of my keyboard, Koots. There is discussion of "damage" to the hairs in the inner ear, but nothing I could find either, about pigment.
Some of the instances given as examples in research (mostly fairly recent) mentions deafness in dogs of colours which would probably have been unlikely to lack pigment, in the hairs of their inner ears or anywhere else on them.
