Thawing meat for dogs Alaskan style:

1) Put 50 pound frozen block of chicken or horse liver or Blue Race diet in giant laundry sink.

2) When starting to thaw a little, take the block outside and lay in the snow.  Take a sharp ax to the frozen block and chop into sections convenient for nine dogs and a litter of hungry pups.  This is about four or five sections.

3) Fight off invading ravens and magpies with said ax...don't worry, they are too fast to get chopped up into additional and FREE feathered dog food....collect stray chopping meat debris pieces from the ground before swooping ravens and magpies devour them.  Throw sections into boxes, run each box into the house as fast as possible before ravens and magpies unwrap them.

4) Chase said ravens and magpie off with the formerly mentioned ax.

5) If you see a bear, abandon ax, leave the meat for the bear, ravens, and magpies and run for the house.

6) If a moose charges, leave the meat for the magpies and ravens and run for the house.

Repeat same actions two days later.

Veronica,

LOL... It's got to be a real kick to live up there!

For some strange reason I see you running around wearing barn boots, a robe, cussing out loud... with an axe in your hand.

Thank you for the laughs....

I defrost in the fridge, then when the meat is throughly unfrozen, I place it in warm water to bring it to temp (for my snakes, not my dogs, dogs can eat it cold but that would kill the snakes).

I do the same as animules, only I take out 3-4 days worth of food. When I buy the meat I divide it up in ziplock bags with the meat, bones and organ meat devided up the way I want each meal. Occasionally I have to soak one in warm water when I forget to thaw more out. Thawed any longer and it smells funny when I open the bag, not that the dogs care but it makes me gag. When I am down to the last bag, I grab 3-4 more from the freezer and put them in the fridge.

OMG Gator, are you my neighbor with the binoculars?  You hit it dead on.  Hubby and I do own nearly two acres in the city limits of Anchorage, but Chugach State park is within a 1/4 mile or so as the Raven flies, so the black bears, brown bears, and grizzley bears wander off of it and pillage the neighborhood.  Veronica

I think if you have a  little butane blow torch , you could just throw on metal tray and light the end with the little ball on it and have at it.

A real fast way to thaw and wont kill the nutrients that the microwave does.

Wear protective goggles and gloves so not to burn yourself.

Veronica I was OK until the bear and moose options and not so sure I could run fast enough to keep ahead of those critters!  It must be an adventure at times up there!

If I remember I'll defrost in the refrigerator.   If not will leave out for a few hours to defrost, which usually ends up being in the microwave (obviously not turned on)   As I have a professional counter surfer when we are not home.   LOL   Defrosting in luke warm water works well too, will defrost faster than sitting out......

The bears aren't bad..I DO worry about the bears when I have a litter of yummy puppies in the heated dog barn, but no bears have tried puppy muchies yet even though I've seen one sniffing the dogs through the kennel panels.  It's the notorious Ms. Moose who I don't like.  She's charged both me and my daughter at different times this past year.  She would have gotten my daughter, who was inattentive and walked up within about 15 feet of the grumpy Ms. Moose while taking a dog out to the pen.  Fortunately Arwin was the dog with her...she stopped the moose charge by throwing herself in front of the moose and barked like a machine gun to turn her away, then chased her down the hill while Autumn escaped to the house.   Veronica
