This likely has NOTHING to do with hips, but as several have suggested, is most likely degenerative myelopathy. Some cases are slow to develop and others more rapid. I just put down a female who was almost 11 for this very reason, though it broke my heart to have to do so. She started dragging her one hind foot perhaps as few as 5 months before hand, and by the time I had to put her down, was dragging both feet, and was very unsteady, had no proprioception and was crossing her back legs when trying to walk. It is a painless condition supposedly, but none the less, the ultimate outcome will be that the dog simply cannot get around, and many end up loosing control of their bowels and urine. It is sad to see it but the kindest thing is to not prolong the inevitable. When the time comes that the dog does not have the ability to do what it wants to do, it is time.

I am sorry for all those here who also lost their dogs recently. It never gets easier to loose a dog one loves.

I also had a GSD a few short years ago that had the dredfull DM.One day out of the blues his back end gave out COMPLETELY.I was lucky enough to have a decent vet at the time and he put the dog on Medicam and the dog bounced back for several months until cancer took him in a matter of a week.Hope this helps. The medicine really did seem to be a life saver as far as the DM went.
