Oh Great now you are all scaring me to submit my just taken OFA xrays on my near 6 year old male GSD.  He was "a" normal at a year and I wanted to see what they looked like now and get an OFA rating.

Do you think that the dog's age at the time of the xray would help/hurt in anyway?  ie:  I think that these look pretty darn good for a near six year old dog who's been working in herding and schutzhund all of his life.

How reliable is your vet?

We take our dogs to a specialist who use to read images for OFA.

so far, 6 for 6.

Those hips look darn good and the positioning is not that good. I would stick with the a normal and not mess with OFA.

Great topic timing for me !  I have choice for PennHIP or OFA digital with our vet and Thor is going Friday for his Xrays - which one should I do?  Would anyone advise me to do both?  I am also going to have DNA & Thyroid done at same time.

clews, if you have the option for penn hip that might not be a bad idea.   but, does anyone know if penn hip is accepted for a breed survey?  I also did OFA thyroid panels on both my guys.  Both were normal.  :)   The more information about their health clearances the better.  I'm still pondering on whether or not to actually send them in!  LOL  Was supposed to xray my female again today, but we ran out of time.  She was also "a" normal at a year, she's 2 1/2 now.

I know that they look good as well as the people who have commented on them on this site.  I really wanted to know what they looked like after a few years of work on such a big guy.  To me, the fact that they still good good after 6 years, says that the hips are good.

Hi Rez, I emailed you earlier today but it kicked back - great on the results of your xray of your 6 yr old!

I also looked into the USA program, since Thor is AKC registered and no tattoo yet I don't believe I can go that route.  I checked for USA tattoo'er and none in Florida at all - minimum 6-7 hour drive just to get me out of the state - anyone have any tattoo suggestions? or will SV accept microchip as ID?  Could not find that in the USA info.

Thor would need to be tattooed by a USA breed warden and then registered with USA, then they can send the xrays in for an "a" stamp.  U.S.A. will also submit elbow xrays to the SV.  Last I knew you send in a separate credit card number that the SV charged directly.  Geez, that stinks that there's no USA tattooer closer to you.  I know that a microchip is accepted at trials, but I think that for anything else ie:  show rating or breed survey a tattoo is required.

Would I be able to take him to a regional trial to get his tattoo? Next one in FL is:

November 24 & 25, 2007
Spirit Working Dog Club (FL)
Trial: SchH 1 2 3 BH
SV Judge Willi Steiger

I guess that you would have to find out from the club that is hosting the trial is USA breed warden is going to be there to possibly make arrangements to have it done there.   Generally speaking those events are just trials.  But, if one was going to be there you might be able to make arrangements to have it done.
