We used to have a longcoat which we all referred to as "Ol'
Rottie head" 'cos he had a somewhat shorter, squarer head
than his relatives. He was a very dark (blanket pattern) dog.
I know it rarely gets super-hot here in the UK but I don't recall
him ever having over heating or breathing difficulties. But I'm
pretty sure there was no Mastiff input !

Well, I think something has been greatly misunderstood. There had been study done by Elaine Ostrander of the Fred Hutchinson cancer Research Center in Seattle. They went to dog shows and swabbed about 400 dogs of 85 breeds to begin with. They found that some dogs of certain breeds are closer related then to others. The GSD is closely related to the Mastiff and Boxer. However, this doesnt mean that they were interbred. Humans share a lot of genes with Chimpanzees, yet we did not ever interbreed.
Coming from East Germany I have never heard of any Mastiff breed being used to create the DDR line. But the east german dog had been created by controlled direct selection of breeding dogs with traits that were sought after. I dont think the East dog has a shorter muzzle, but I think the WG SL does have it. I also think that dogs with shorter muzzles tend to be more intolerable of the heat than dogs with longer muzzles no matter the coat color. My guys are from east german lines and I have been training all summer in NC with temps in the mid 90s. The one thats breaking down is rather me...LOL
