I have my pup with the collar on at age 9 months right now.  Low level stim while in drive and getting praise i.e playing ball or tracking.  pup is learning that E Collar can be used as PRAISE as well as negative reinforcement.   if you know how to use it is an amazing tool.  Can't think of it as a correction device only though....think of it as an extension of your hand.  you should be able to conveye praise, direction, and corrections with it.  Enables you to do all of these actions from a distance.

i called the place we took her for puppy preschool and asked if i could come and observe their ecollar training before i decided whether to do it or not. the answer was no, i needed to enrole in the class. i also had to purchase their collar for the class, and could not use the dogtra 1900 i already own. i know for sure i won't be going here for anymore training.

That is weird, as a dog trainer and obedience instructor I insist that people come and watch a training class.  Bizarre from a business stand point?

Good luck anyway, you will need a lot of it! That`s all bullocks!
All the best

Jimbo, Tell them to shove that E-Collar where the sun dont shine......

I cannot attest to how good he is with e-collars, or effective, etc, but Jim Sears is doing an E-Collar seminar titles "Proper and Humane use of the E-Colla" March 2nd at Illinois Schutzhund & Police Club.  that may be something to look into.   I have the flyer for the seminar if you would like.  Just let me know

that's pretty much what i told them. It's one of those franchise training places- It's the only one we have in town. i thought it was stupid that i had to use their ecollar instead of my dogtra. from what i have read it seems the dogtra collars are pretty good, i'm sure better than their in house collars. That's why she is in residency training now an hour away. It would be nice if i don't even have to use an ecollar on her. I'm not interested in doing any Schutzhund training with her or protection work. One thing i have been looking at though is possibly doing something like a therapy dog. She has such a good temperament that i would like to share her with other people to make them feel better.

Jimbo, If I am reading you correctly, there is no need whatsoever to use an e-collar to train your puppy to be a good "pet". Train everything ON lead until you never use the lead to correct at all, EVER and then once you get to that stage, the lead is pretty much just an ornament that you carry around attached to your dog out of habit. If the dog is never allowed to do something ON lead and if it is trained correctly so that everything is solid then when you take the lead off, it will make no difference to the dog.

Sorry just noticed I had typed something incorrectly in above post....My excuse is I was using the phone to type into the forum at the time... The last sentence SHOULD read:

"
If the dog is never allowed to do something you don't want ON lead and if it is trained correctly so that everything is solid then when you take the lead off, it will make no difference to the dog and you should for the most part only get the behaviours that you WANTED.
"

Apologies for any confusion.

jimbo:
You may want to find a working dog club in
your area. Just because you don't want to "do"
schutzhund, doesn't mean you cannot go train at
a club. There are plenty of people doing obedience
and tracking titles only. You don't *have* to do
bitework if you don't want to
