Moderators .. I got a message that I was trying to steal data from this web site and there was an error code . I got a warning in that message that if I continued that I would be banned. I tried to contact the administrator or moderators to inquire or what was so wrong with my posts . But I could not get onto the PDB site. I contacted my computer tech support and there was nothing wrong with my computer. So I left it at that , until yesterday , and found that I could get on line to the PDB. To be truthful I wasn't going to visit PDB or post anymore. I was going to move to another working canine forum. I didn't take it personally.

The irony .. with all truthfulness , not lying here !! ... A canine behaviorist friend referred a woman and her husband to me . They had GS in the past and she was accosted 2 times . They called me for a GS that would quote " take someone out in the event that happened again" . I spent 1 hour on the phone with her because someone offered her a dog that would bite someone if needed. I guess we call that civil ... But the irony ... So , even if that were true , the dog would bite .. I was so concerned because if she saw this dog bite... how would she ever know if this was a sound dog ? She would probably see the dog bite .. but .... This is why I came back to the thread.. to see what others have written since I was blocked. This is why I answered Kyles post. . When I hear civil , what am I to think about the dog , except it bites for real , people. So I took a chance posting thinking that I might get banned again . Honest truth , Miss/Mr moderator...

We did not block you that I know of, I bet it was a glitch.  I just recently got error code trying to log in sent email the the pedigree site email with copy of code and was back up and running in less than an hour.

Should that happen to you again or something similar just send the email so copy the email address down incase you need it.

In regard to Gustav's post on page 9, which other posters have complimented, I too think this is an excellent answer to what I was saying. Basically I wouldn't disagree with Cliff on most of his post BUT (while he's NOT one of them) there are posters who come here from time to time who DO state, or strongly imply, that the only GSDs worth having are the 'civil' ones. Sometimes they interject this in topics that posters such as Gustav, Duke etc would not concern themselves with, where people are discussing conformation, or looking for dogs to undertake other functions (Assistance Dogs, e.g.) and not for GSD to do sports or protection with. And unfortunately where this implication goes unchallenged, the threds are being widely read - by a lot of people who do not have much information about the breed, and may take away a distorted idea of 'what the GSD should be'.  So alternate arguments are necessary, and from time to time this is what I try to kick off.

It does not hurt us to take a look at the ethics of what we support in & around this breed, occasionally.

While not wishing to come across as a promoter for the loons of PETA, I do worry that what was begun as a PASTORAL breed of dog is tipped towards a GUARDING breed of dog in the view of many of the public.

Centurian when this happens it has to do with your Internet Provider IP address.  Try this disconnect from the Internet clear your cache, reconnect and it should solve this problem. 

This does work as it has happened several times to me too while working on several dog pedigrees at a time.

I tried disconnecting alone , several times , but that did not solve the issue . If that happens again I will in addition clear my browser history and cache . Thank you administrator

Hundmutter, in reference to your last paragraph...very few people look to the breed for Pastoral purposes and frankly haven’t looked to the for Pastoral purposes for many many years, whereas the breed has been at the forefront of guard type work for a very long time( until recent use of Mals ) and still is very highly sought. So it’s not a matter of tipping toward guard away from Pastoral, but rather it’s tipped towards Pets away from work. ( Obviously sport and show are prime motivators for breeding also)
I also like to give newbies accurate information.

Except for the name itself, Pastoral use of this breed is probably less than 2%.

Going by general perceptions rather than semantics as to the precise & active meaning of words like Pastoral (and bearing in mind the difference in how the UK Kennel Club names its Groups), you might be surprised to hear, Gustav, just how often people over here subscribe to the notion that the GSD was created in order to be (not so much useful as a Police and Military dog, let alone a herding dog) but for sticking on the front of premises on a chain to 'guard' them ! The increasing interest in working dogs as 'personal protection' feeds on that image.
The existence of so much ignorance proves both your point and mine, about lack of basic knowledge and research.

Whether they really should be regarding dogs as something disposable to risk sticking them between themselves and an assailant is another issue.

Like always the goal should be to find the golden middle.
In case a breeder breeds for stable, willing to work GSDS, able to protect if necessary, there won't be problems at all.
Statistically seen some pups will be fine for sport, some will be fine for "real" jobs, some will be fine for pet homes/companion dogs.

In my country ALL dogs have to go through the bitework of the breed survey prior to breeding, no matter if they are IPO dogs, RH2 dogs, certified police dogs, or herding dogs ( that said bitework is ALWAYS included ).
Within the herding dog trial there even is a test for defense ...

That said there are a lot of jobs and sports a GSD should be able to do, but not all of those jobs/sports make them breedworthy...

foremost GSD should be a breed with outstanding intelligence/reliability.

unfortunately today in breeding selection the emphasis goes toward dog's looks and/or exaggerated prey/play drives.
the truth is that overly pronounced drives pretty badly affect both - intelligence and reliability of the dog.
