I understand that the show line versus working line debate is rather a fiery one; I have my own rather biased opinion which I will keep close to my heart.

I am, however, rather more interested in what people define as 'working line' versus 'sport line'? For me, a therapy dog, a herding dog on a stock farm, a S&R dog - these are working dogs. A dog trained for a specific sport - IPO, mondioring, agility - these are sport dogs. For m one is not any more or less important than the other - just different. Or is it semantics?

Thank you.

For me a "working dog" is a dog that works for someone, not for itself.
I define "working" by doing a job on a regular basis, not because the dog necessarily has fun doing the job ( although this should be the goal of training ) but because the dog is willing to work according to my rules,
f.e. most dogs are willing to hunt, but as long as they only follow their drives, they are not "working" for me.
Same with a dog protecting its home out of drives only, this may be a "barking" dog, but without obedience no "working" dog.
A "working" dog doesn´t need to be out of "working line" ancestors, it simply needs to do a trained "job".

A "working line" is a dog bred out of dogs primarily used for any kind of job, not primarily for conformation.

Personally for me a dog trained for IPO, KNPV, Ringsport or else, is doing a job (working), because the dog has to follow my rules, no matter about its momentary mind. The dog doesn´t know it´s "sport" - in it´s mind its doing a job, it´s "working" for me.

Does this make sense?

Susie:

Are you trying to say a dog that will work(what ever it,s job) on command.

A working dog to me can do any job be it Assistance, Sport, Protection, any job that benefits man. I included sport but that mostly benefits mans ego. Although it does show the dog can take commands. As long as the dog has been thoroughly vetted in proper training which allows the dog to show it,s true genetics and soundness it should be able to do any thing.

"Are you trying to say a dog that will work(what ever it,s job) on command."
Yes, that´s what I tried to say.
For me "sport" is "work" for the dog, too, because the dog has to work for me. At least my dogs are not able to understand the difference between "sport" and "real work". They have to do it.

Forgot to mention: A dog "sitting on command" is no "working dog". I was thinking about more complex "work".

I often get the impression some of the people on here who talk about
Working dogs - but who clearly have a low opinion of the assorted
hundesports - think that the only worthwhile 'work' their dogs can do
is in some branch of Law Enforcement, OR as serious Personal Protection
dogs because they work in some area of Security, and/or carry jewels or
large amounts of cash around. Every other activity is either consistently
knocked, or ignored.

Any job the serves man is a pretty wide array of venues. From military to Therapy and every thing in between. As long as the dog is sound and properly vetted.

A big difference between sport and real working dogs, in sport the dogs have done the exercises
for 100,s time the same boring routine in S &R, military tracking dogs in war zone , police PSD, or
narcotic dogs etc you never know what it brings tommorrow and in what situations and conditions.
the dog have to do his job he don,t need a judge for points and sport routine.

Black, someone doing "the same boring routine" all the time in IPO won´t have much success, this dog/handler team will stay on club level forever.

"One serves humanity, the other serves human ego....y'all can figure which is which:-) "
That´s true, but for the dog there is no difference.
