Another of his offspring became blind from cataracts in both eyes. Cataracts were detected before a year of age. They progressed to causing almost complete blindness by age 6. Vision was restored after corrective surgery at age 7, but the dog requires glaucoma drops daily as well. This is most unusual as inquiries with other malamute breeders indicate that cataracts generally do not lead to blindness in this breed, so perhaps, this is a one-off, but I know of at least three cases of cataracts in his offspring.
