I just found out today my german shepherd has absorbed her puppies - they were due yesterday - the vet felt one after 4 weeks in gestation - does anybody know how this happens and how it can be prevented in the future. Thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Email me at GRandolph@ci.tulsa.ok.us

Hi Georgette, So sorry to hear of your loss! If you look back into the archives there will be a similar thread with lots of good information. If you don't find enough information there you can email me. ebinezer052899@yahoo.com

I havent been to the archives, perhaps this will be duplicated, but it cant hurt to test the bitch for Mycoplasma. It is a culture and they grow the bacteria and if its in moderate or above levels that is a possibility for the loss. Mycoplasma is a TERRIBLE thing for reproduction. Very sorry to hear of this. Hi Georgette; So sorry to hear of the loss of your litter. On the advice of a terrific friend and mentor from Germany, I do a prophylactic treatment of my bitches with Clavamox (amoxicillin) beginning on the first day of heat, and for the next 7 days. Mycoplasma is a great concern, and it seems to be more prevalant these days, more than ever before. Amoxicillin will rid the body of this and other bacteria. I then give natural yogurt so that the "good" bacteria can be regenerated. Mycoplasma can cause reabsorbtion of the pups, as well as abortion early on, and can even prevent the female from getting pregnant in the first place. So...in this case- better to be safe than sorry.

ohayougozaimasu Morita san. Haven't seen you here. You don't know me but we have the same friend in Germany. I have another friend (gee, that makes 2) that is having problems with re-absorbing or not "taking". So I will see if they have used the methods you describe to help. Sorry Georgette for your troubles -- it is disheartening to wait through a pregnancy and have it end this way -- better luck next time. Make sure Mamma is not overweight and I would discontinue heartworm preventative and things like frontline - before the next season begins.

'ohayougozaimasu Morita san' Pineridge- was that addressed to me? Hmmmm are you the Japanese gentleman who wanted one of my double Kirschental kids? Or what?

Konigtum,hi, i didnt know Amoxicillan can rid the bitches of Mycoplasma, typically they prescribe Chloro tabs in my area. Doxycyclene doesnt really work either, or may need a second dose, but the Chloro tabs for 6 weeks does the trick. although there is going to be a normal amount in the flora, but yes anything over moderate is not good. It killed a litter of live pups and also caused an absorption as well. there are foolish breeders that dont bother to check their females after puppies die for no visible reason or if they are trouble conceiving. Should always be the first thing that is checked. It can be cured and can never be found in the bitch again, but the key is to test for it folks, better same each breeding than sorry. The best time to have the culture taken is during the time of Estrus that way you get a true result. If found in moderate levels, there should be no breeding done that season, treat and try again next one. Very controversal bacteria. Regards, Dawnmarie
