I love looking into so many of the breeds as they randomly pop up when we come to PDB.

Tonight a cute scruffy little Portuguese Podengo caught my eye.

Reading about I find they come in 3 sizes. I was shocked to read the medium sized will be used for boar hunting in Europe. Really, that little thing? Just how big are wild pigs there anyway?

I can see the large size being used, even though I do not consider them to be a substantially sized dog. A lot of Black Mouth Curs & Catahoula's are the same size as the bigger sized Podengo, so sure why not use it for wild boar?

My American bias is simply getting to me, as around here hog dogs are usually some substantial dogs.

I can already imagine the conversations here if I were to get one.

"Where'd ya find that stray?"

"It's a Portuguese Podengo."

"A POGO what?"

NO, I am not in the market for one, of any size. It was simply another breed that was fun to learn about

Today I was watching YouTube videos of Portuguese Podengo's..

At dog shows. Learned the large sized scruffy coated ones do not have an undercoat. The large can get up to 28" tall? Did not read that at AKC, or anywhere else, last night.

Watched a medium sized Podengo hunt rabbits with a pack of Beagle's. Really did not see much of anything, as I am sure YT would have banned the video. In the end the guy displayed well over a dozen rabbits on his tailgate. I think he only had one Podengo in the pack, & am clueless what work she actually contributed. But he did title the videos to be about Podengo's, so obviously he is proud of the dog.

Learned the little size historically only came in in smooth coat. Though a few decades ago they added in several other breeds to to invent a scruffy coated dog. They are great little hunters. Oh, & they do pop up like pogo sticks, over the vegetation, to see where their owner is.

They are very active dogs. Vocal dogs. Always on the hunt. Get the zoomies. Can't help but dig holes. While very trainable, they did not seem to be fairing as well as I expected to on agility courses.

At the moment I found three at shelters in the USA. Before any reader rushes out to adopt one, please seriously consider this breed is nothing like "Lassie" or a laid back Labrador. If they see a squirrel, or your neighbors cat, the chase is on! Hunting is deep in their blood. If in the house & sees or hears outside other animals, people, kids, moving vehicles or most anything else, you are going to be told about it.

I do like the breed. They seem to very much love their person. I have enjoyed learning more about the Portuguese Podengo today. :)

Going a tad off topic here, but a wild boar in Europe stole a nudist guys clothes. I feel for the guy, but the pictures are priceless.

Baby boars are called piglets not cubs. What can I say, it is Yahoo that is ever so inaccurate.

Then included is also a video of a wild boar swimming at a beach which gave everyone a fright. Do note the hog went straight on the attack once out of the water.
