I don't think a dog purchase has ever served more thoroughly as a cautionary tale. Two years ago I posted to detail my experiences with this person and her Malinois breeding operation (I won't repeat those details here as they are available on the other thread). I have since learned that she also breeds miniature Australian Shepherds under the kennel name Viva Aussies. (Edit: I mention the Viva Aussies name so that consumers will know that Malinger Kennels and Viva Aussies are one and the same).

The dog (my Malinois) at the center of the last controversy sadly has been diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy. He suffers from grand mal seizures and has a host of other health problems including panosteitis, GERD, IBS, and several eosinophilic afflictions of unknown origin which have made him severely ill on several occasions. It's sad for me to have to face the fact that this two year old dog has never been healthy and likely never will be.

I paid $2,500 for this dog who was to be a SAR prospect. While he is able to compete in sports he is not reliably well enough to ever work in SAR. I purchased him with a grant from my SAR team.

Since the breeder has dozens of health and working ability "guarantees" posted on her web site, I contacted her and requested a refund so that I can repay the grant and the next handler in line can get his dog. So far she has not replied. I will update this posting if she ever does.

After being notified of my dog's seizures, the breeder repeated the breeding of his parents and continues to utilize them, and my dog's littermates, in her breeding program.

Lastly, I have had to issue cease-and-desist letters both to the breeder Jenn Segal and her friend Dawn Marie Ramsden for nonstop harassment, slander, and libel, most notably on the Internet and especially on this site. (The third person participating in that campaign has apologized and retracted her statements after having a remarkably similar experience with her Malinger Kennels malinois, which had to be recently euthanized due to severe idiopathic epilepsy).  If this behaviour continues or is repeated, I will have to take swift legal action.

Rumor has it that this breeder has plans to start a German Shepherd breeding program next. Lord help us.

As usual anyone with questions or in need of more information may contact me directly.

Jill - did you purchase the Aussie after your bad experience with the Mal?

by jillmissal on 24 January 2020 - 09:01

@koots

I did not purchase an Aussie from her or anyone. Jenn Segal breeds Aussies as well as Malinois so it's worth mentioning both "kennels" as they are one and the same. Sorry if that was confusing; I edited the original post for clarity.

The dog I'm referring to in this OP is the Malinois I bought from her; the one referred to in my original post of two years ago.

Jillmissal, I thought in the last thread you had got satisfaction when you got your papers?? Is this thread a new complaint??

Yeah, I read it differently than you intended, I guess.

mrdarcy, you're correct, the original problem she had involved the registration for this Malinois...it looks like now said dog has been diagnosed with a host of health issues that are allegedly covered under the 'guarantees' that breeder has published on her website, and the OP has contacted the breeder regarding said guarantees but has not heard a word back.

So yeah, it does sound like there's a new problem involving the same dog. Damn shame, but with the idiopathic epilepsy alone, the dog will never be able to fulfill his intended career as a SAR dog.

Thank you Hexe. In the last thread there was mention of the seizures and Pano, sorry to hear the dog has developed more issues. Below was from the last thread....

I also purchased a male puppy at 8 weeks old, about five months after I purchased the female. He had two minor seizures as a young puppy, and has recently developed panosteitis, a self-limiting but very painful disease. Luckily his flare-ups are, so far, infrequent. He has not had any seizures past the age of four months, thus far.

Correct, this is a "new" issue. The original one with the papers was resolved.

The breeder dismissed the early seizures, calling them "low blood sugar events" and blaming them on vaccines and food. She then repeated the breeding of the dog's parents and also bred close relatives and sold all those puppies to unsuspecting buyers.

The dog has only had a few seizures in his life but now that I am sure of what I am seeing and it has been confirmed via MRI and veterinary diagnosis, it is epilepsy.

Such a thing can happen to any breeder, but an ethical breeder would have taken the initial reported seizures more seriously and stopped breeding the line until the cause was found, and an ethical breeder would refund a buyer who ended up with an epileptic dog, especially one with this many health problems.

@hexe, his digestive issues alone were a major concern for his working career, and the epilepsy was just the icing on the cake.

The other matter of concern here is that this breeder couldn't just give me the papers and let it go, she had to direct her followers to attack me publicly while providing them "ammunition;" that is, complete lies (admins, I do have evidence of this sent to me by one of the people she used for this purpose, and can submit if necessary). This isn't just words on a forum. The things she and her followers have done have had very real consequences in the real world and I am done tolerating it.

Thank you for clarifying. Have you sent the breeder all the vet reports confirming the dogs conditions and she has still not compensated you?

by jillmissal on 26 January 2020 - 08:01

@mrdarcy,

I offered to do so but she didn't reply to me at all.
