My female went into heat and my male tried non stop to breed her but was too tall for that to happen so we went with Ai. I noticed a small amount of blood in his semen that i figured his penis was irritated from all the humping, is this normal? tried uploading pic.... it looks slighty pink

Might also/instead be possible he's picked up residual staining from the bitch's discharge. Give it a few days, see if you can get him to produce some more and check that for colour; if its still there, get him vet checked.

I was wondering what is the difference in height between your male and your female?

by jcturf311 on 18 June 2019 - 12:06

He is a good 10 inches taller at the hips.

Are the male & female even the same breed? The height difference makes me ask this.

by ali44 on 18 June 2019 - 14:06

In GSD (if they are both GSD) the height is measured at the wither. A difference of 10 inches at the wither is huge and if the AI worked you should be prepared for a c section. If this 10 inches difference is only at the hips, then the female must be very, very overangulated in her back legs and not ideal for breeding.

Who measure at the hips ? Beside 10 inches is like 10 miles in dogs, even if the female is at the minimum size (55cm) and the male on max size(65cm) difference would be 10cm or approx. 4 inches. What you trying to achieve from this breeding ?

To answer your question, no it is not normal to have blood in the male’s ejaculate.  It can be introduce through trauma, especially from the small, fragile blood vessels at the end of the penis.   It can also enter through the closed organ system.  Prostate often comes to mind.   I cannot tell you where the blood entered the sample you collected, but I have seen it perhaps 20-30 times as a result of trauma.  Any foreign surface can create injury that leads to a bleed.  One animal would bleed as soon as a collection cone (bull cone) was in position.  Others would bleed one time and never have another occurrence.

Any foreign matter that enters the sample may have a spermicidal effect.  Under a microscope I would often see sperm trying to fertilize those red blood cells, or any type debris/material that was inadvertently introduced.  I want to think that red blood cells may also break down a protective enzyme that can prevent proper fertilization, but I would have to go back and research that.

With all other things functioning (male and female) as they should, if you did a side by side AI, unless there was a significant amount of blood in the collection and an extended delay before delivery into the female, I would not be concerned about fertilization.  I never encountered an incident where a small amount of blood prevented pregnancy.

Discuss what happened with your vet.  He will do a history on your dog to determine if a prostate exam or other test are needed.
