There were some women who opted for aborting the foetus when test came back positive for down's, and also late term abortion when ultrasound showed anancephalis.
I remember a blood sample of neonate had to be put on a card and sent to a lab to test for retardation...don't know what retardation specifically, but supposedly the parents would have an advantage in treatment when caught early.
Too bad a DNA test didn't exist for future mass killers.
Things have changed and evolved dramatically in over fourty years...as the ad goes, you've come a long way baby.

Okay Joan, the question was would you turn in your child if he was the unabomber. Not whether you would kill him. Then you made it about killing him in the act, it wasn't about killing in the act. Your response at the time which then you changed later - " Unabomber?...I'd kill him myself, then turn him over to the cops to eliminate everyone's suffering and prevent the criminal's continued suffering of his soul." Again nothing about catching them in the act. If you found out ahead of time you by your own words said you would kill him. Why wouldn't you just turn him in? For you to say this to a bunch of parents is to us unconscionable, cold and callous or at least to me it is. So, if you caught your child raping a woman/man or sexually abusing a child would you kill him/her? I am guessing this guys religion made him kill his gay son http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/los-angeles-man-charged-killing-son-allegedly-being-gay-n549576
I will stick to my original comment - WOW!

Sue Klebold, mother of Columbine killer, Dylan Klebold, is a mom who lives daily knowing the hell of her child's deadly deliverances. This magazine article/review reveals the push and pull of her considerations after the fact, when forcing herself to consider what are her contributions to his upbringing, and trying to reconcile the aftermath of Columbine.
Her idea of "good" parenting, even in retrospect, seems to focus on controlling and preventing negative outcomes rather than staying engaged and helping to reframe the confused, black-and-white thinking of a teenager into a more accepting space of forgiving yourself and others for being less than perfect. After all, it's not just school that's sometimes not fair. The world is often a "not fair" place, and it takes a lot of patience with ourselves and others — and an ability to gently stand up for ourselves rather than either rolling over or going ballistic — to push for change.

As to the guy who killed his son for being gay and also his wife, being blamed on religion? I think it does sound like it could be a perversion of a religion where the justification is expressed as an "honor" killing—that kind of mentality.
If we dissect it further, wouldn't it really just be about someone who can't stand losing control of his family? Isn't that the father's character flaw? Missing is the family bond of love that we see motivating the OP mom to turn in her own blood for a small crime, thinking to prevent him from making the mistake of bigger crimes. This is the difference.
