There is a difference between a puppy age up to about 4 months, which can be compared to baby/ toddler and and a puppy past this age to maturity which can be compared to child/ teenager. You would be wise in making these comparisons in the way you treat the puppy in it's different stages. That being said, a dog is not a human and you diminish the relationship between the two if you can not make that distinction.

I say baby all the time when referring to a young dogs mental make up concerning protection work.  I've never been mistaken for Brittany Spears either.

and I refer to my older bitch as a sweet baby all the time. She is, deal with it :)  She acted like a puppy till she was 5 and it had nothing to do with ill manners.

I had a 2 year old dog (I just sold) and called him a puppy because he acted very much like a six month old.  However he's never been out of control.  In fact he's always had the best recall, instantly drops on out/aus command, etc.  But as far as his play style, how he works in protection, etc he has been very slow to mature and really is a puppy in the head.  I do have high expecations for my puppies though.  Even 8 week olds are not allowed to terrorize my house, be mouthy, and act completely out of control.
