@Sunsilver - My thoughts exactly on "cage free" boarding! I'm looking for a new kennel since my regular one is closing and I've noticed that "cage free" boarding has really grown in the Guelph, ON area. However, I noticed that if you read the teeny, tiny print that some breeds, like GSDs and Dobermans, are banned. Free range boarding just seems like a crazy idea to me.

"IT ONLY TAKES ONCE"    If you're willing to take that risk... just remember this truth.

Hi Jackie!

I am not taking a view on what is right or wrong. I know a few people who have to separate their dogs, especially when they have over a certain number - in essence a pack. One of the reasons I would never want that many.  Just an observation on how things used to be, especially over here, before we had ever even heard of crates! I just wonder how our interference impacts on the overall dynamic. Not to say that situation can be changed, but I have a questioning mind.... How much behaviour do we create. Do dogs which are crated keep having to re-establish their position over and over each time they are allowed together again.......does it generate an endless loop of behaviours that they would not have to undergo if they were together all the time? Just thoughts.

I know for sure that once bitches have taken their stand there is no turning back! I wonder how much Bit suffering with EPI has a bearing on her behaviour if any? .

I do agree, it only takes once.

Hi! I'm late for work so this is a quick reply....Bitty was friendly, happy & very social with the other dogs until her EPI went full blown, which happened to coincide with Kali's illness. But, her personality changed......maybe because the EPI made her feel so bad?

Jackie, I think medical problems would be valid to cause that type of problem.  After all they can even cause dogs to have human aggression.

At one point, I had 4 sheps loose in the house (3 males one female),,never had a problem.

I then got down to 2 sheps, male and female, and a male and female aussie..The male aussie to this day,(and he's 11) has to be crated when no one's home, he's a crap stirrer and I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him left alone with my other dogs.

Right now I have a female gsd, a female aussie both are loose when no one is home, and the male aussie who is still crated.. I honestly have never had a problem at all with my loose dogs, atleast no one's talking and I've never found blood:)

I'm sure it depends on the dog(s).
