I agree with you. I have seen real protection dogs. The black working killer type! They are small quick, and bite. That is not what I am looking for, too much drive. Basically a trained dog with basic protection training. My wife needs a dog for her daily walks. She is small and there are many predators out there, maybe I watch too much TV. We both love the GSD and can appreciate a well-disciplined controllable one.

I'm sorry but I think whatever the price, your first thoughts should be toward your 5 year old daughter. If you will have your dog in the house near the child, a dog that is realiable and cool around small children should be your first consideration.

We got a dog from a rescue, he is now a little over a year, great with my 4 year old..just big and goofy..but try to get into the back yard or approach any of us in a threatening way on a walk and he'll definately protect us....what I'm saying is if you don't want to pay the big prices and you don't want to actually "work" at the Schuthund etc, just want a dog to protect you guys..then look around..a good GSD will naturally protect it's home and family without all of the training etc. That's just a thought if you just want a pet to protect you.

hi Brandoggy --- that is NOT TRUE !!!! by no means -- first depends on the temperament and make-up of the dog / behavioral traits !! some may natrurally encounter , but then again i always raise an eye when i see a GSD with no training or perhaps no guidance behave like that -- not all dogs will protect , for their first insticint is self-preservation which is most easily accomplished by fleeing /avoiding harm / battle -- watching , guarding, alerting and protecting are all very very different -- and if it is an older dog aggressing , well zmelli better understand that it is not biting more so out of fear ..--- REDcap* best comment -- oh yes !!**-- one must utmost be consciuos of children ...did you think : do you want your dog to protect your child from well ..from other children ??? and in my estimation .. a good GSD companion /pet family dog is most often more than adequate ---AS i stated zmelli -- THINK REAL HARD

Alphapup-sorry, just my experience with the dogs we have had now & in the past, they have all been protective of our home and our kids..of course not to other children...they come over all the time.. They do alert us and go to the gate, door etc. I never "trained" them to do that. If I wanted him to "bark & hold" he'd look at me like "what the hell are you talking about", If I held a sleave out in front of him he'd do the same..so in those regards yea they need training. And NO they have never bitten anyone..of course no one has tried to come in the gate that wasn't supposed to. YOU said "and in my estimation .. a good GSD companion /pet family dog is most often more than adequate" ---AS i stated zmelli -- THINK REAL HARD" that's pretty much what I was saying..

If you spent time with the dog, and you know him... that sure replaces buying the dog directly from a bunch of sharks that are only out to get your money. $2500 is not a bad price... especially when you consider the safety and well being of your wife and daughter. Don't be fooled by all the people out there that just want to sell you something... if you know the dog in question, then I think you can make the decision. DK

ok brandoggy -- i often don't enunciate correctly myself -- but the main point here is that zmelli understand there is a difference for a dog , any breed for that matter , alert without approach , to approach , to guard [ bark and hold ]. and to actually encounter and protect i.e. bite - as stated - once a dog does protect in the real sense ... it is no longer a pet , never again just a pet .. perhaps part of the family but not a family pet ..nor should it have the privledges of a family pet . / the price for a family GSD -- well a well bred pup in this area NE USA 7 weeks old is worth $1200 to $1500 -- so now what ahould the value of an older dog be if someone has put i n the obedience etc for you with this GSD ?? personally i would think at least the amount of the pup ..at least

by Brandoggy on 22 July 2005 - 19:07

gotcha! I understand what you are saying now..my hubby doesn't enucite correctly most of the time either!! lol just jokin' zmeli..keep us posted on what you decide. Good luck
