This is a great thread, you guys are wonderful. Barb's Strut is clear on what is going on with Randy's help, it is a win win in my book.

Again....some people got caught up in the table training! I was referencing defense and barking. By the way....if your tied up and your area is restricted and your challenged as this dog is being challenged...it's either fight or flight. I do understand the whole sport dog thing....nice dog!

This is a really interesting thread and video. I can't help but to imagine my Mal on a table like that with that helper.

She would be all excited and bark like mad if he had the sleeve on. But would most definately not like the slaming of that stick on the table. She would be scared and I think curl up laying down tail tucked and all. Although if pushed, she would fight before pee. And I don't think she'd bark first. She would be in like a frozen state with the helper before she'd react.

She has never had to physically defend herself to anything or anyone. Except to a pack of nosey yotes while in heat, then all she had to do was bark and move forward and they all kept their distance. This was also the only time she wouldn't listen to my recall. She stood her ground like I wasn't around commanding her to get out of there. This is the only time I've ever seen her in a serious defense bark or even posture to the point of maybe having to seriously defend herself. She does bark all the time at most people coming to the house, farm or vehicles. But never in a defensive type way, like with the yotes. More like making herself well known.

I know she is very high prey and locked. This is how I got her to free range the race track growing up. Now she just runs with really no point "B" in mind and on the track she just runs the rail. Her everyday prey at this point in just full throttle I think. And squirrels. And the sleeve on special occasions.

Anyhows, I think with my Malinois, inorder for her to defend herself in a situation like in that video, she would almost have to be hit with that stick a few times to get the point of it all. Me knowing this about my dog, and viewing the video, I'd never put her on a table. I think it would ruin her when the sleeve is present.

Would this be concidered bad nerves to you people ?  Just wondering.

Ron, your premise question was "why is table training needed to tap into defense training"?   Nobody said table training is NEEDED to tap into defense. It happens to be a way to do it and it also is a way to work on other things as Jim and  I posted. There are many ways to tap into defense as you well know. The trainer evidently felt that in looking at the whole picture of the dog's development(which we can't see from here) that this was beneficial at this point. Many people get to the same place without the table. Both ways work!!

As i said None of this Table Work is done in Belgium not least where i live it is not, But it is doing its job in the case Of Strut and that is what matters,
Dogs are individuals and all react differently,  but whatever training method one adopts so long as the outcome is good with a happy well balanced Pup at the end that is all that matters

Gustav.....

I know you don't NEED a table for anything....again and for the last time...my emphasis was on barking and defense. If you'd like...remove table from the sentence:-) I like the dog!

The Table and Box are tools that are used by many trainers in the Czech Republic. The Czech trainers and dogs have been very successful in Sport and Work at a very high level. I think that Nate Harves also had an article in the USA magasine on table work in which he explains the concepts more elonquently than I can.

Basically the same article is on his site ------ Sportwaffen K9----and with videos..
