As usual Keith, you miss my point. I like you anyway, for some reason. I wasn't really addressing you at all, though it is your thread. I was addressing the rather amateurish views on pano as more than a nuisance.

in re: your headache analogy: I'll explain it like this- I am no more of a pussy than my dogs, so when I have a headache, I don't whine about it  and behave as if the world is ending. I suck it up and go on with my life. In fact, I never take any pain medication at all. Ever had a c-section, Keith?

If a dog is in serious pain, sure, treat it. But for a minor ache, c'mon. Toughen up. The sooner they realize life is long and miserable, the better off they'll be.

HTF is Rimadyl safer than aspirin? And who said aspirin is safe? It's all relative.

Didn't miss the point at all.  I completely understood whom you were adressing and what you were saying.

"I suck it up and go on with my life. In fact, I never take any pain medication at all. Ever had a c-section, Keith?"

Of course not; did you have yours without anesthesia?  Ever had functional rhinoplasty?

Functional rhinoplasty? C'mon, Keith. Admit it. You had a nose job to be prettier. We're all friends here. It's ok to come clean.

While I was not completely numb and was wide awake, as I wasn't stable enough for anesthesia, that's a piss poor comparison.

I've been busy with real life. Miss me?

I didn't want to say anything since it didn't work.

"While I was not completely numb and was wide awake, as I wasn't stable enough for anesthesia, that's a piss poor comparison."

A real tough girl would have given birth tthe old fashioned way.

"I've been busy with real life. Miss me?"

But of course!  So how's that new bitch of yours?

Keith, beautiful or butt ugly, I love you just the way you are. I'm witholding my opinion, however.

The old fashioned way, tough girls don't have babies at 31.5 weeks gestation. Pretty tough to have a baby the old fashioned way if you're 2+mos away from labor.

New bitch is good. Pain in the butt; I can totally see where she was too much for their home with their circumstances. She is as high drive as any female I have ever met...and definitely the highest drive DDR dog I have ever seen. Sometimes I'd like to strangle her. But then I remember how tough I am and I just suck it up and stick it out.

Pano is caused by fast growth.  If you feed too much of anything "good" and dog grows too fast then he may get pano. If you feed moderate amounts and include meat in the diet then the probability of Pano is very low.
Sunshine, variety of meat, make sure the dog is always little hungry, do not  supplement with minerals and vitamins but use  holistic diet which is not originated  from shiny bag and exercises the pup and young dog moderately through the day and not in spurts ,...and that is from  puppy hood  and your dog will not have much chance to get pano. The diet habits and types, and any supplementation from a bottle,  changes the dog's hormonal ratios from puppy hood and even from  the mother's habits. So you may feed your pup meat all life after 8 weeks of age, but if your dog was too fat,  were fed high mineral (even in proper proportions) and vitamin  diet or with supplements as a pup and his mother was too,  then he is already set for life. That had been determined  in many studies.
This all is also applicable to hip dysplasia.
Since it is genetically predisposed then some dogs are more prone to it then others. I would hate to see a trend where breeders  are so concerned by pano that  they put it on top of their priority list and forget to see the rest of the dog. Just like some people who breed hips instead German shepherds.
Pano is not on top of my list when I worry about doing genetics for my breeding. There are many more important problems. Temperament, hips, elbows, spine, teeth, testicles, general structure, endurance, trainability, courage, prey, defense,
pigmentation(!), fight drive,  immunity, ............................. not necessarily in that order.

Hans, I've only had one dog with it...and he had it at 28months. Hardly fast growth, LOL! It showed up on an xray. I had him to 2 ortho specialists b/c of a slight limp. No one thought of pano b/c he was so old. But there it was, loud and clear on the xray.

I have always fed all my puppies the way you suggest. They are typically thinner and a little smaller than other pups their age, but they mature slowly and evenly and don't have any major growth spurts, or at least not as many or as obvious as the pups who are overfed. I did an experiment to prove my theory that this is the proper way to feed a pup and to allow them to self exercise- don't push them but don't go out of your way to limit it, either. I raised one with a very "laissez faire" attitude- fed him only raw foods, and not much of it, left him outside whenever he wanted to be left outside, didn't supplement at all, and didn't listen to all the people who said he was too skinny and I shouldn't let him play that much. He spent much of his first year playing by himself in the backyard if he wasn't at work with me.

His hips are EXCELLENT, though he ran and played all the time, he never had pano, (though a couple of his siblings did) and to this day is extremely healthy and hardy.

I'm not saying anything I did is what caused this great outcome, but I think there is alot to be said for treating a puppy the way a puppy would naturally be reared by nature. Staying in a crate all day, then having extreme bursts of exercise and coming home to a giant meal rich in vitamins and minerals and nutrients he doesn't need is not how nature does things. And I have yet to meet anyone who can truly improve upon nature.

Dog grows until 3 + years and can get Pano for that period of time. There are exceptions to everything though.
Short of that
I love what you have said Jennie78.
