I shipped a 10 wk old GS from Frankfurt to Atl via Lufthansa Cargo last 23 August 04, almost 1 year ago. I paid 214,20 Euro's plus a 25.00 u.s. dollar pick-up once he arrived. This is for 1 dog IN A 1 X 200B Crate. Dim were 1 X 65 X 47 X 47 0,144cb I would call Lufthansa G.K. AirFreight Service and get the information direct. I can't imagine paying 1,000 dollars for a full grown GSD 10 years ago, but maybe prices have increased today per fuel increases. Get the right information from the source!!!

Zack, we are talking about an adult dog here, not a puppy. Plus you had no ground transport. Ground transport for a puppy costs the same as for an adult dog. It goes by distance travelled. $1000 for someone flying the dog over in person is yet another story compared to using one of the two shipper. Flight prices for people greatly depend on the season and destination. There are cheap flights in the off-season and usually only from major hubs. Lufthansa does not service all destinations anyways, you can only use Lufthansa if they fly there non-stop, when shipping cargo. Michael - would be hard to find a 500 series crate for less than 150 Euros retail in Germany, and the shipping companies have the 600 series crates special made. If shipping on your own, you might be stuck with shipping a 700 crate if you cannot get the inbetween size yourself.

I was just stating that you are charged a very high premium for the crate and i was takien by suprise at how expensive they are in europe. you may also want to contact Delta Aircargo they are a codeshare partner with Delta and if you book through Delta here in the States you will be charged U.S Dollars and not Euros. The dog will still be on an Luftannsa plane but that may save you the currency exchange. I flew an adult German shepherd from holland to boston the 1st week of april on Delta with my own crate for $375 U.S Dollars. generraly traveling with the dog is much less expensive only if you get a good price on ticket. If you know anyone traveling to Sieger show maybe they can bring the dog back for you? also book the animal in advance with airline i think they only take like 8 dogs per flight and i am sure those spaces will book up around that time

Hi Michael since Kari would have a hard time getting a crate to Germany for a lesser price, the difference would only be around 60 to 140 Euros for the flight portion ($375US = about 310 Euros, plus 160 for crate retail = 470 Euros). With Petair or GK you also know that they will look after everything, and if something should go missing like paperwork, ummm... or the dog, they will track it down, their hassle and time spent, not yours. They also make sure everything is in order before the dog leave. They are far more informed than an airlines cargo counter (individual airlines deal with all sort of cargo and see it as the shippers responsibility to make sure all requirements are met). The extra service is well worth the extra few dollars. IMO anyways. From Holland that is a different story though. Last time I checked the dutch shipping company is a lot more exensive than the German ones. Your option is a good alternative to keep in mind for that. Good info, glad you provided it. :o) And glad I asked. Say Good Night, ZACK!

This past Thursday I had an adult male GSD shipped from Frankfurt to Newark Liberty Airport. The dog was originally in Denmark. The broker drove the dog gratis approximatley half of the 10 hours from Denmark into Germany. Petair picked up the dog and drove him to the airport in Frankfurt where the dog was lodged for one night. The next day the dog made the non stop flight to Newark from Frankfurt. The broker put the dog in one of his own crates to help save me money. Total cost 760 euros. The price for the flight was 480 euros. All of the extra cost was the transport and over night of the dog in Frankfurt. By the way airfare to Franfurt from Newark round trip is running around 1000 US dollars. Regards, Kyle

If you are a military reservist or hold an military ID or can someway get onto a militay Kaserne, those 500 series crates will cost $75 USD,and they are heavy duty, will go through SEVERAL trips back and forth.

You need to be careful with buying crates above the 500 series if you are not picking up the dog at a major hub when it arives. If you are living in an area that is only serviced by "regional jets", some of those model's cargo areas are too small to accomodate anything above a 500 series crate. There is no problem with the cargo space on the widebody jets fitting the large crates.
