ShelleyR

by ShelleyR on 30 May 2011 - 21:05

My "luck" is definitely changing for the better, more a product of my own relentless efforts, however, than simple fate. Its been a long, rough, stormy road these past nearly two years, but there's sunshine up ahead at last. Getting my health back, better than its been in years, is a huge bonus! I wish T's overall health had held up longer, but I'm extremelygrateful I still have him and he IS improving! The stuff I lost, or what little I really need nowadays, can be replaced... in time.
I needed new stuff anyway. LOL
The friends I have today, from before the incredible journey and made along the way, are invaluable to me. The ones I lost were not worth having in the first place. At least I know one from the other these days. :-)

Happy Memorial Day.

Shelley...how are you? how is T? any more improvements? we all may not post but i am sure a lot of people do wonder and worry... I hope things continued to get better...God Bless.

T continues to improve, slowly but steadily. This morning he surprized me by disappearing around the side of the garage in the back yard to chase a cat off the fence, all on his own. When he heard me coming outside to see what the fuss was, he ambled (best term I can think of for his odd gait) back to come in the house. His front is pretty good, getting strong, but the movement in the rear is still kind of crazy, on and off his hocks, (more off than on every day) occasionally knuckled over on the left rear for a step. I catch him practicing standing up, out on the grass, giving serious consideration to placing and re-placing his feet and legs, moving his weight around between them. I'm told he is re-training his nerves to do the jobs he needs done, but if I've noticed that if I'm right there to help, he doesn't try so hard, so I do a lot of my observing throught the window blinds. I can see the whole (small) side yard from the windows.

He also seems to instinctivly understand the principle of inertia. He knows the faster he gets going forward, the farther he can get before his balance or strength fails him. Now that he's getting better, he doesn't fall much, but lets himself down easily when he needs a rest. The process was honestly painful to watch in the beginning, but more exciting and heartwarming every day. Sure, he'll have an "off" day once in awhile, especially after a day of particularly impressive gains, but my dog refuses to be an invalid. I wonder if I would have the same resolute attitude, the same endurance of purpose, were our roles reversed.

I wish I didn't have to leave him for 5 days tomorrow. I will board him at our vet, where he will get "exercise" 2-3x a day, but nothing like what we have been doing most days. I hope he doesn't backslide from sitting around too much, but I have no choice on this trip, so I'll just go and worry the whole time, drive the staff at the vet crazy calling to check on my boy. He is well-liked there, and he loves Dr Black, and I'm redecorating his indoor run with his carpet and rubber mats so he can stand up without his feet sliding out from under him. I can't wait till the weather warms up the water so we can go swimming. Its been so cool and so stormy nobody has opened their pools here yet. :-O

Thanks for asking.

I just got word I don't have to go tomorow, may not have to go at all. x2b postponed the hearing at the last minute AGAIN. At least they didn't wait till I already made the trip before they pulled this crap like they did twice before.

Yippee: No boarding for my boy, and no huge expenditure of time and money to make an unnecessary trip for me.

and booooo: Sucks the ticket is non-changeable... What a waste.  :-(

At this point, the airline who holds the ticket has the power to make changes, if any, and you may have to pay a fee.  It is totally up to the airline/airlines.

Perhaps an emergency change due to court crap will win you some consideration.

It won't hurt to try.

What a sickening waste of all those airmiles.

I have no cell reception here today for some reason, so I am going into town to call the airlines directly from my roomate's business phone.

Shelley
It's wonderful, so heartwarming to hear the progress T is making. I can almost visualize him practising in the garden on his own! Did you get the front end on his walker yet?

ShelleyR

by ShelleyR on 04 June 2011 - 17:06

I never did get the front wheels on the cart, but he doesn't really need them now. He hates walking in the cart, BTW, drops like a stone when I bring it over to put him in it. I wouldn't be surprised if he runs the other way next time I bring it out the door towards him. Talk about motivation to get up and move... He's tiff and weakest first thing in the am, same as me, but I only have to give him some help in the rear, with his vest-sling-thingie on, on non-slick surface, to help him the 2 steps in and out of the house, and on slick surfaces. I plan to pick up a nice room-size rug on CL today if its still available.

I've been trying to get the airlines to do something. So far I've been placed on HOLD for 30 minutes, twice, doubtless somewhere on the other side of the world, then the line goes dead. Nice customer service we get these days. Clearly they don't care about my cell phone bill. I'll keep trying though.
I'll be glad when the day comes that somebody 3000 miles away, who I am busy trying to forget, can't make decisions for me via remote control.
The little bit of good news? A stipulation of the court allowing the opposition to postpone is that I don't have to appear in person.... ever.
Doesn't make up for the wasted airline ticket, but some consolation.

What is really great is hearing you say 'he doesn't really need it'.

You've done a fantastic job with him, please keep us posted as to how he's getting on.

I don't really know anything about the court stuff you're mentioning, but it sounds like good news anyway.
