YR,
That's a good looking boy! Crate, kennel and pen; Each has a purpose and each serves a purpose. Never heard of a crate harming a pup? Maybe if the crate was too small ??? I have three GSDs: Reiker M, 9 in Mar., Anastacia F, 2 in Apr. and Arabella F, 5 mos. All go in crates in house/in vehicle. I'm sure some are going to come down on me but when Reiker was a pup, I was a police officer. He was being trained for a police K9. I was working 12 hr. shifts, 0600 - 1800 hrs, 3 0n 3 off. I would be up at 0400 hrs to start traing but preparing for work, staying after work, having an arrest and processing the prisoner. My days were like 16 hrs. He was a pup and no way could he be free that length of time in the house. I wasn't going to have another watch him. No problems ever, whatsoever. No hip problems, nothing. I stated earlier somewhere. I will never give up a dog, (or animal) It's never a perfect world and one has to work. The dog is happy to be with you! Now on my days off we were everywhere togther to make up for that.

All pups go in crates, just like all the above stated. Ana, will still go in a crate say, when we
are in the house and Bella just wants to have fun. Reiker won't tolerate but Ana will play too. So to calm everyone down, crate. All are crated in the truck unless Reiker is up front with me.

Bella, is crated indoors til she earns/proves otherwise. Each person is going to do what they think is best, and that is the way it should be. YR and Lady Frost are right up along the same lines as me. If I'm cooking, the dogs CAN NOT be in the kitchen! They can be in the threshhold with a paw or two over the line but they can't be in the kitchen. They can't beg, mooch or drool. With Reiker there could be meat on the counter, table or trashcan. Will not bother it, Ana the same. Bella=pup=different story.......for now. Just recently I have Bella going into the crate before I even tell her to once coming in from outside. Neat thing. All I have to do is start to open the latch and every dog is trying to be the first to get in. If the crates are in the truck they're flying through the air to be the first in the crate so we can get on the road! It's a great tool. Just don't use them for punishment. Kennels are the same way. Once, Ana was so excited to get into her kennel she didn't let me have enough time to open the door. She didn't get hurt but after bouncing off the door was looking at me like it was my fault.

Pharaoh

Harley is very handsome.

I had Pharaoh trained to be in the car, like it was his crate.  I learned the hard way that things change.

When I was house hunting and after I sold my house, we were living in a hotel.  The room had a kitchenette and a large desk.  The second bed in the room had rows of file boxes. I am an accountant with a home office. We were together all the time-24 hrs per day for three months.  There was no yard, no crate.  All my stuff was in storage.  Fortunately, the hotel had nice landscaping and paths to walk and lawns to play fetch on.  If Pharaoh was not totally spoiled before, he is now.

The problem began when I was looking at houses.  I would follow the realtor and leave Pharaoh in my car-no problem.  One day the realtor said let's just go in one car.  She convinced me it was OK.  We would stop at a house and leave Pharaoh in her car.  Her large dog goes with her often.  There was a blanket in the back seat and when her dog is in the car, she mouths the seatbelt.  Pharaoh went a little bit further and shredded the seatbelt.  YIKES!

He chewed the seatbelts in my car too!!!!!  Suddenly, I could not trust him alone in the car anymore.  He was almost three.

I had to go searching through three storage units to find my crates.  Of course, they were up high on top of stuff.  I could barely reach them with the tips of my fingers.  It was a miracle that I didn't break anything, like my head.

So, I have the crate in the car now and when I am in the car, he is free, but I lock him up when I am out of the car.  Seatbelts are very expensive.  Dogs learn new things all the time.

I had a K9 buddy. Just got his K9 and had a somewhat brand new cruiser. (Have no idea what he was thinking) he had gone to Wlamart and didn't latch the kennel. Thoght he would be back in a few. That dog destroyed the headrest and half of the carseat by the time he came back. Had some explaining to do to the chief. The rest of us were rolling on the ground!

Thank you Rooka, YR, Michele and everyone else. Yeah. I am leaving him in the crate during night time sleep. And from morning till evening he is in the yard & the house depending on what we are doing. I am not using the kennel now but am trying to get a cover for the kennel and use it during rain etc so he has enough room to stretch. He is very well crate trained but I am the one who worried a lot about keeping him in the crate.
A breeder told me to put a wooden plank on the crate floor so the floor is firm than slippery and a towel. So he doesnt get a chance to eat a dog bed in the crate.

Pharaoh

by Pharaoh on 20 January 2011 - 00:01

When Pharaoh was a baby up until about six months, he slept in the crate.  My older dog slept on her bed, sngged up to his crate.  Then I took his bedding out of the crate and put it on the floor next to Phanny's bedding. The bedroom door was closed, so there was no temptation to roam the house while I was sleeping.

When Phanny died, I combined their bedding which was very comforting to young 7 month old Pharaoh, who grieved for a long time.

He is a good sleeper unless I have house guests sleeping in the guest room.  I have to lock my door because he will open the door go to the door to the guest room, open it and hop on the bed with the guest an lick their face.

He can open the bedroom door, but unless there is someone in the guestroom, he sleeps deeply and wakes up when I do.

Michele
