The dog pound believes my mutt is a mix of Australian shepherd and shar-pei.

The only German Shepherd I recognize is... washed out color, saddle back, and at LEAST 90 pounds, slanty back end.  King sized, baby!

Psycht

I train in Petsmart and other similar stores several times a week for distractions and by and large I have found the the general public is uneducated about purebred dogs.  With that said, many are eager to be educated, or alternately, are eager to show off their lack of education ;-)  I have heard it all with my ACDs - requests to use my male as a stud, is my female a mini-heeler, the blues are "rare" tri-heelers etc.

What works for me is when I am busy training and do not want to educate someone at that specific time, I ignore them.  No eye contact, turn away from them, essentially give them no opening to approach me unless they want to be rude and rush in.  I have only had that happen a couple times in all the years I have been training.

If I am in the mood and have the time, I will make eye contact and allow for an opening for them to ask questions.  I figure a little education can go a long way plus my young female loves the attention so sometimes I use the contact with a stranger as a reward while we are training :-)
