I agree KC, I would also be dissapointed to see the standard raised to include oversized dogs.  In fact I applaud the SV for taking steps to correct the problem of too many oversized dogs.  It's a bitter pill for the owners of oversized dogs, but one that has to be swallowed nonetheless in order to preserve the working ability of the dog.

ok, but you will need to change the name of your breed because they will no longer be GSDs.

If you change the size standard of the GSD the SV/WUSV will go the way of the AKC.  I fail to see how increasing the size will help improve HD and ED,  I fail to see how an increase in size will help improve our breeds athletic ability.  I fail to see how the increase in size will help improve our breeds endurance.  I fail to see how this increase in size will increase our breeds ability to jump.  I fail to see how the increase in size will help a search and rescue handler carry their partner in and out of a rubble pile.

If you folks want to change the standard you have to change the name of the dog.  Call it the dog formerly known as the GSD,  GSD the humongous,  Monster GSD.  Maximium sized GSD's.

I am obviously in the working dog camp.  This is but another reason why I do not approve of "show" without "go".  If the dog cannot work it is not a GSD.

Man am I dissappointed with you guys that approve this crap.

Call them Stuffed German Shepherds because their only function will be to look pretty like teddybears. yuck.

The word work, has different meaning to me.    Just wanted to clear that up.   A gsd doesn't need to be any larger in my opinion.     I've also said standards are lacking for GSD's.    A GSD is so much more than the work or show dog everyone argues about, much more.  

Oh well.

Two Moons:  I agree with you that they are so much more.  HOWEVER, a very important part of what they are, is  a working dog, and out of respect for the founder of the breed AND for the over-all good of the breed we must never, ever lose sight of that.  What they are NOT is just oversized lap dogs.  This is a really important issue to many of us who feel when you start to discount the work, and not breed for the work ethic, you will also lose many of the other things that make this breed so special.

The standard says 65 cm for males and 60 cm for females...but they are ALLOWED over are they not? I think they are allowed 2cm over? Granted most are more than that but there is some leeway I believe in the rules...

I know this is being watched closely now in Germany and trying to bring the dog back to standard. Hopefully we will see a decline in all the oversized dogs. But most of these dogs can and do work.

Just curious, but is there anyone who does NOT have oversize dogs that thinks the standard should be changed to accomodate them and the size limit should be raised?
