Do your friends call you Snookie?

Well welcome to this..........lol

I'm in Southern Indiana, an old guy with three GSD's.

If you do not want to show or compete then I suggest doing your own basic obedience.
You might browse through one of William Koehler's books for training ideas that you can use yourself.
There are many methods you can research.

The GSD needs activity and obedience along with a good home.

Now is a good time to start.

Great, thanks for all of the advice. We have actually been working on tracking with him. I agree, they definitely need challenges. He is most interested in activities that are challenging to him (like tracking)...I am using liverwerst right now as the treat for him to sniff out (my grandfather was a detective and informed me that's what they used to train their shepherds...probably wayyyyy back when).

Other ideas would be great. I do have one book on shepherds and another that is more general in terms of training. What are the training areas that you think are most important?

Most important to any GSD are obedience and socializing to start.
Then specific training.
Tracking can be very rewarding for you and the dog.

He is definitely very socialized...all types of people and dogs. In fact, I was originally fearful that he wouldn't be so dog friendly because when we got him he was the alpha on his litter. But, he is very, very patient with other dogs, children, all sorts of people, etc. What do you mean by obedience? Sit, stay, etc, that kind of stuff?

i would get your pup into puppy classes its the best thing for a pup as you learn to do basic ob and the lots of socializing.
i also do think you should tittle your pup , get a CGC , CD if you just want to do AKC, Rally is very fun for you and the dog. or get a BH,SCH  through the SV. the KKL is the breed servey, you would need at least a show rating and a sch tittle to get
this,. there are many areas for you to take a look at.
tracking is a wonder sport too.
bi-color is fine to use for breeding, your pup seems to be all working lines..
if you plan to breed you should atleast do the dogs hips/elbow as a min..
there are many people on here just want to start trouble,i would not bother to answer them.

thanks trixx - your dog is a dollll, so cute!  Where do I find all of this stuff? I am searching for training books (i have 1) and there is a trainer in my area that is a family friend (danny gentile out of nj) - not sure if I should try to go to him as well. Besides sit, stay, down, come, heel, etc - are there other obedience commands I should be working on?
