I met a lady the other day who had 2 GSDs. One was an elderly female, and the other an oversized, rambunctious male with helicopter ears and a sickle tail.

It was obvious the female was a retired brood bitch, so I asked if they were maybe mother and son, thinking she hadn't been able to sell the male due to his conformation faults.

"Oh, no," she replied. "We tried and tried to get them to mate, but never had any luck!"  What Smile

Thank the reproductive gods for small mercies!

A few years back, there was a couple who used to watch me work my dogs at the park (very nice couple).  We began talking about dogs and they were very interested in Loki, asking if I thought of selling him and I said no.  They said they had 3 female GSDs and showed two of them.  Finally one day they came up to me and said they wanted to breed Loki to their females. The lady sent her husband back to her Cadillac SUV and brought out 3 of the fugliest looking GSDs I had ever seen.  Banana backed, narrow collie shaped heads, cow hocks, extremely long pasterns almost parallel to the ground, back hocks only inches off the ground, chests like the prow of a ship.  They had big white splotches on their chests and one looked like it was liver and cream saddle coloring (for lack of a better description).  When they trotted up, their back legs kind of swung out and around.  Supposedly the black and tan ones were champion show dogs and the liver one was an anomaly from the litter they decided to keep.  They asked what I would charge to let Loki mate their three females, money was no option.  They wanted strong litters and figured Loki was the male to do that.  I politely declined stating I was only breeding him to a specific female that a friend owned, but thank you for thinking so highly of my dog.

Ugh! Were they American show lines? (Sounds like it.)

I believe they were per the owners.  Very poor examples.

@Jenni78 - I'm curious about the dislikes of my post too. :)

Slamming the person on PDB for their lack of knowledge or sending an email shaming them isn't likely to change their attitude. However, a conversation or even showing them might help. Since we've moved to rural Alberta, we've had several strangers stop by our property and ask about breeding to our GSDs. Martin has patiently explained why Senta isn't breed worthy (there are a list of reasons why she's spayed) and why Bosco (he's intact) isn't a good choice to breed to either. Martin steadfastly maintains that he's not a dog person but he talks to the people about the GSD breed standard and what it means to him. Folks always comment that they've never thought about reason x, y, and z before - just that our GSDs are beautiful. I don't know if Martin changed any minds but nobody drives away hurt or in a huff.

Laura, good post.
I get the same with my 3 GSDs that go in public (can we breed, you can have one of the puppies, we will split the sell, etc).   Every one I decline.  Even when I was looking for a stud for Rose, a stranger coming up to me on the street was an immediate turn off.  I, too, now explain why I made the decision not to breed Rose again or her puppies.  I try to educate them on what a breeding should be (thank you all for the education) and I refer them to this site for good mentors and additional information.  So far, no one has walked away angry.

There is a guy down the road from me that had a sign out in his yard, "German Shepards For Sale" Just out of curiosity I stopped.. WOW.. He claimed the stud was an ex k9, couldn't tell me what department or what the dog supposedly was trained for.. The mom was a yellowish white color.. He said he only registered his dogs through CKC, because AKC was too expensive lol.. Anyways he asked if I was the lady who rode the horses with my GSDs.. He than began to TELL me that my red and black LC was not a purebred, since he had never seen one that was that color or with that kind of coat, but he knew how to breed that out of her so her pups would look purebred.. He then told me he never breeds the plain tan and blacks, since they are too hard to sell lol.. And he had about 5 other dogs he bred, all looking wore out, on chains.. Scary thing is, he must get buyers, since he has litter after litter..

Suspect that most of us take a 'calmer' and more explanatory attitude
with people who enquire after our dogs or make daft statements, out
in the big wide world.  I know I do.  Like Laura/Martin and Fawn, I know
that I much prefer to let Jo Public walk away from me better educated
but not angered.  I sometimes 'vent' on here, though !  And maybe that's
wrong, because PDB is a place Jo Public visits too, you never know who
is reading threds or what they will make of them.  But OMG its so nice to
have a place full of like-minded people where one CAN shout about all the
stoopid stuff out there !

Yes Hundmutter, like you and others, I try to educate rather than give into my more "WTF" attitude.  Sometimes the hardest ones to educate are family and friends.
