I once had a female shepherd who was a dedicated stool eater-her own or anyone else's.  This went on for 2 1/2 years when I finally got her diagnosed as chronic Giardia.  I treated the Giardia with panacur and switched both of my dogs to a Raw Meaty Bones diet (RMB).

People told me that she would be a stool eater for the rest of her life.

She stopped after a few months of no Giardia and eating like an Apex Predator.  She lived to be 11 1/2 when she died of Osteosarcoma in her pelvic bone.

Maybe it is coincidence, I don't know.

I was told in the past by a vet if a dog does that to add a couple of tablespoons of canned pumpkin to it and they should stop.

I was told to use frozen chopped spinach and also pineapple. I use the canned minced pineapple and also the canned chooped spinach. It works well.

There is also a supplement called Deter that you can either get it at petstores or also order it online. Solid Gold also makes a supplement call S.E.P (Stop Eating Poop)

Hope this helps.

I too have a 3 year old poop eater female.  She will beg to go out to eat only her poop. She is on Solid Gold with digestive enzymes like probiotics (she was very ill as a young pup, almost lost her twice and LOTS of antibiotics which have impacted her digestive development). My trainer friend has made the suggestion that if she is healthy without any "bugs" (she is according to my vet), it may have become a psychological need. I am trying the basket muzzle on her everytime she goes outside to stop her from being able to reach the poop (it is the type that allows panting and such and I will never leave her out unattended when she is wearing it). We are in the process of making the muzzle fun by putting food treats in it so she puts her nose in on her own. Eventually we will lengthen the time she wears it so that she doesn't think it is punishment. This is only the first step in breaking the behavior and allowing redirection.  She gets to eat multiple small meals so they are easily digested (in small batches). There is someone here all the time so we have the ability to watch her need to go out with multiple feedings. I am hoping this will work toward redirecting her need to poop eat. If any of you have had luck in changing this behavior, I am all ears so to speak.
