What kind of guarantee were you wanting with an adult. They should already have hips and elbows x rayed, temperament  and conformation should be evident  You could ask to see the dogs vet records, if the vet will allow. With an adult dog, it's pretty much what you see is what you get.

You are on the right track in not taking anything at face value, but a guarantee is worth no more that the person behind it.

the guarentee that I was looking for was on a puppy, I did not want an adult dog

most guarantee's aren't worth the paper they're written on.

ex: I thought I had a pretty good gaurantee on my working line pup, well I found the fine print which states I must have kept every receipt showing how she was fed, She had to be kept on several supplements ect.  PLUS her gaurantee only covers crippling dysplasia which must be found by the time she is 12 months.  I seriously doubt if anything does go wrong with her hips or elbows that the breeder would do a damn thing about it.

for him to say he didn't need any gaurantee's because his dogs were so good is a load of BS.  I don't care what titles or show ratings are behind dogs, it does not gaurantee good health!  I know several people who are new to the breed that think just because a dog is out of titled parents that means there is no hip issues. no reason to even x-ray
